Hi from Rick: This Is Good Travel

When I'm in Turkey, there's always one special morning when I don't shave. It's the day I need a good stubble for my ritual old-fashioned flaming shave. I find a barbershop that just reeks of conviviality, with old Turkish boys hanging out and gossiping — maybe about tourists like me. The lather, the straight blade, the pinch-and-pull-my-nose-up moment to get a good clean shot at my upper lip…it's everything Wyatt Earp would expect. And then comes the uniquely Turkish finale: Just when you'd think I'm ready to pay up and leave, my barber whips out his cigarette lighter, ignites a tiny rag, and spanks all the little zones of my face that might have tiny surviving hairs. As I hear — and feel — those friendly flames, I think: "This is good travel." This isn't another ride at Disneyland…it's a true cultural experience that I'll never forget… Read more
