Würzburg

A historic midsized city, Würzburg isn't quite charming (thanks to its unmistakable post-WWII-rebuild vibe), but it's worth a stop to see its stately prince-bishop's Residenz, one of Germany's most enjoyable to tour. Surrounded by vineyards and filled with atmospheric wine bars, this tourist-friendly town is easy to navigate by foot or streetcar. Today, 25,000 of its 130,000 residents are students — making the town feel young and very alive.
