Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Switzerland

We'll meet at 5 p.m. at our hotel in Luzern (Lucerne) for a "Welcome to Switzerland" meeting. Then we'll take a meandering evening walk through Switzerland's most charming lakeside town, including its famous Lion Monument, before getting acquainted with one another over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Luzern.

Day 2: Luxurious Luzern

We'll begin our day with a walking tour of Luzern, learning how a backwater fishing village grew to become a bustling center of trade in medieval times and one of Europe's must-see destinations on the "Grand Tour" a century ago. Our guided walk will take us through the city's restored medieval core and over its famously colorful pedestrian bridges. This afternoon, we'll travel by bus and boat, tracing the tale of William Tell and the birthplace of Switzerland at Rütli Meadow. Before returning to Luzern for a free evening, we'll stop at the once-secret Swiss Army bunker at Fortress Fürigen, where we'll see part of the massive defense system designed to keep Switzerland strong and neutral.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Boat: 1½ hours. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Luzern.

Day 3: Storybook Appenzell

This morning we'll leave Luzern and head to Switzerland's "cowbell country." As we make our way to our picturesque home for the night — Appenzell — we'll encounter green, rolling hills; finely-carved chalets; colorful villages; and plenty of happy cows. Upon arrival, we'll settle into our family-run hotel, then head out for an orientation walk learning more about Switzerland's most traditional region. You'll enjoy some free time to wander through our storybook neighborhood before regrouping for dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2½ hours. Sleep in Appenzell.

Day 4: Ebenalp and Italian Switzerland

Our day begins with a gondola lift to the peak of nearby Ebenalp. You'll have time to savor the 360-degree alpine view and perhaps head downhill to see the 400-year-old Wildkirchli cave church (hermit monks lived and worshipped here from 1658 to 1853) and a guesthouse built precariously into the cliff. Then we'll trade our mountains and meadows for palm trees and a taste of Ticino, the Italian side of Switzerland. On our way, we'll stop in the fortified town of Bellinzona to practice our best Swiss passeggiata. This afternoon's destination is the dolce vita lakeside city of Lugano. Your guide will take you on an orientation walk before setting you free to enjoy one of the town's many idyllic open-air restaurants.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Lugano.

Day 5: Free Day on Lake Lugano

It's time to take a vacation from your vacation, on the sunny side of the Alps! The day is yours to stroll along Lugano's shops and harbor, ride the funicular up to the top of 3,000-foot San Salvatore for great lake views, or hop aboard a ferry and cruise to nearby Swiss and Italian villages. We'll regroup this evening to board a boat for our Ticinese cooking class and dinner together.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 1 hour. No bus. Sleep in Lugano.

Day 6: Lakeside Lausanne

We'll say ciao to Lugano this morning as we make our way into the French-speaking corner of Switzerland. Driving up and over mountain passes, we arrive into the canton of Valais, where the mighty Rhône river flows through the valley floor before making its way to Lake Geneva (and then to France). We'll stop at one of the small towns that dot the valley floor for lunch and then it's on to Lake Geneva and the city of Lausanne, where this afternoon we'll get oriented to our old town neighborhood before sitting down to test our French over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Lausanne.

Day 7: Lake Geneva's Château de Chillon

This morning, we'll hop aboard our coach and set out for Château de Chillon, where we'll enjoy a guided tour of the delightfully medieval castle on the water. Then we'll stop for lunch at one of the beautiful towns that dot Lake Geneva's shoreline continuing along the shores of the lake for a wine tasting at the spectacular Lavaux vineyards. We'll return to Lausanne with plenty of time for you to explore the tangled and historic old town, stroll around the idyllic waterfront neighborhood of Ouchy, and find a tasty French-influenced dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1½ hours. Sleep in Lausanne.

Day 8: Swiss Chocolate and the Heart of the Alps

Today we'll depart lakeside Lausanne and head into the heart of the Swiss Alps. On the way, we'll indulge oursleves by stopping at a local chocolatier and sampling a sweet selection to judge for yourself if Swiss chocolate is really the best in the world. After free time for lunch, we'll pass lush green meadows and dramatic alpine peaks, before ending our journey with a thrilling gondola ride from the Lauterbrunnen Valley floor up to the clifftop village of Mürren. You'll have some time to commune with nature and delight in the high mountain air before we enjoy dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 9: Schilthorn and Hiking in the Berner Oberland

For an exhilarating start to our day, we'll take a gondola ride up to the top of the 10,000-foot Schilthorn and enjoy breakfast together with a view of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. The rest of the day is yours to explore more of the magnificent mountains on your own. Whatever adventure you choose, you won't be far from the three essential ingredients of the area: cows, cheese, and chocolate.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 10: Rural and Urban Switzerland

Today we'll make our way to stately-but-human Bern. Along the way, we'll visit an alphorn workshop and learn all about this traditional wooden wind instrument used by shepherds to call the cows from alpine pastures. Next we'll stop at a local cheesemaker to discover how they produce the country's famous cheeses. After we sample a taste or two or three, we'll continue on to Switzerland's present-day capital and our tour's final stop. Your guide will orient you to our neighborhood before setting you free to find dinner on your own.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Bern.

Day 11: The Swiss Capital of Bern

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Bern's city center filled with cozy covered arcades, pointy towers, sandstone buildings, and colorful fountains. Afterward, we'll sit down with a local for a cultural Q&A session on all things Swiss. This afternoon you're free to explore more of Bern, visit a museum, enjoy a beer at an outdoor café, or take a stroll along the river. Tonight we'll gather for a farewell dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Pröschtli, cin cin, and salud!

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Bern.

Day 12: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Zürich's airport by train (75 minutes, 2 trains per hour). You'll have easy connections to home or other points in Europe. Tschüssli!

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of Switzerland in 12 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  5. Adjust to frequent alpine weather changes that can interfere with sightseeing.

We had a great group and our guide was refreshing . She made me smile for two weeks.

This was our first Rick Steve's tour experience so we didn't know exactly what to expect. Overall it was very fun and we saw much more than we would have if we had planned our trip on our own. The tour guide adapted our trip to the weather, swapping days so we would have a good view from the Ebenalp. That was great and is something we'd likely not have done on our own.

Our guide, Donald, was very personable, knowledgeable, professional and overall great fun. I was traveling with a friend and our lodging request was for two single beds. If I correctly recall, the only hotel where we were provided separated twins was in Lucerne. We had pre-booked two nights in Des Alpes, prior to the tour. We were able to remain in the same room for the four nights. Thankfully our hotels provided separate bed linens, giving us some sense of separation.

"Murren was definitely a wow location. I wish we'd had three nights in Murren. The views from the cable cars were breathtaking. Hiking northface trail left me with a sense of awe and deep, peaceful joy. The overall quiet surroundings of Murren enabled us tired travelers to let down and fully relax."

"It is hard to pick just one! Having to choose one, my favorite wow moment would be opening my hotel room window early in the morning in Lucerne. My room looked at the bridge and mountains in the background. It was quiet, serene and so beautiful! Great for making ones’ heart soar."

Lead guide Charlie was amazing, she was full of energy, knowledge and festivity every day. She completely followed the “Rick” guidelines for group travel keeping everyone on time, we actually arrived early at many destinations. It was very hot during our tour, Charlie’s positive attitude helped us survive two brutal nights in Lausanne with no AC in our rooms. We loved Lucerne, Lugano, Murren, Bern and Alps were spectacular. A very active tour, so we really enjoyed free time in Lugano & Murren.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Switzerland is filled with WoW-derment! So to bring it down to one moment is difficult. Do you choose the mountains, lakes and waterfalls, contented cows grazing, incredible cable cars hanging over precipices thousands of feet in the air, or, for me, it came down to one man, in one humble shop, making the one instrument that cries Swiss Alps: the Alphorn maker, Bernatone. The precision and craftsmanship involved in this cultural icon is incredible. Should be part of all Swiss tours. "

Good to very good but not outstanding unlike other Rick Steves Tours I wanted more of a more immersive experience than the tour provided. It seemed like we spent a lot of time traveling on a bus to cities over more alpine experience. The tour lived up to its reputation. Led by "maestro" Tony, our group went from one postcard to the next. The beauty of having Tony was his ability to help us look beyond the surface. Impressive Chateau Chillon, but did you notice the swan eggs in the moat as well? That's what you get when your guide is passionate about the country you're touring. We also have Roland, who not only navigated the bus safely, but actively joined in the group, sharing his perspective.

"So many - Murren , where we watched the sun set on cloud-free mountains, ran into Rick Steves, ate breakfast at the top of Schilthorn and walking the trails; boating across the lake in Lugano and making risotto with Roland's help; walking between Chateau Chillon and Montreaux along the lake; becoming a true group. The tour was wonderful. Our guide, Tony did a great job. He provided much information about the country and people of Switzerland throughout the tour and lots of good input on how to navigate when we were on our own. I learned a lot and I appreciate all the experiences interacting with the Swiss people that were part of the tour, the guides, the dairy farmer, alphorn maker, yodeler. The tour took us to so many wonderful sites -- I am in awe of how beautiful the country is.

I was amazed at the wide variety of experiences in this one country . Our Tour Guide (Charlie) was exceptional. Just amazing. Very prepared, organized, and worked very hard to make the tour memorable for everyone. Our driver was outstanding as well. Accommodations were very good and it was a memorable trip for us, our 1st Rick Steves tour.

While the guides on all of our four previous tours were great, Charlie was exceptional. The country of Switzerland beautiful, and the scenery stunning. The timing and placement of individual places visited were perfect for maximum enjoyment. All of the individual guides were very, very good. Particularly, Ursine in Bern.

This was our 7th Rick Steves tour and it exceeded on all our expectations! We expected the scenery to be gorgeous (which it was!) and the cultural experiences to be educational, but we also had the best Rick Steves guide ever (Charlie), and the best group ever -- definitely a "merry band of travelers" as Rick likes to say!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our wow moment would have to be the impromptu pre-dinner stroll from Murren to Gimmelwald with Charlie and about half the group on the day we arrived in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The views of the Alps were enough to make this a wow moment, but the beautiful alpine flowers, cascading streams, wildlife, and the occasional paraglider swooping overhead made it unforgettable. Relaxing with a tasty schwarzbier on the patio at the end of our trek was the icing on the cake!"

Great sense of humor and very attentive to the needs of group. Entertaining but yet information and excellent in following up on getting information to us. The group had a positive energy that made each group dinner so enjoyable. The hotels were perfectly situated which made it easy to explore . Switzerland was beautiful and the tour included so many educational and fun activities. I would highly recommend this trip .

The tour was amazing- every town had its own vibe and experiences. Beautiful hotels in the Old Town of each stop. Learning about the different areas of Switzerland- German/French/Italian - gave a great perspective of Switzerland being true to their customs and culture yet all part of a united nation. Our guide was a gem- very knowledgeable and helpful with a sense of humor that was hilarious and witty and always humble. Yorick always had something extra to offer Wonderful tour!

This was our first RS tour. The tour was exceptionally well-planned and run. Our tour guide, Yorick, was outstanding. Switzerland was beautiful and we were able to get a wonderful mix of all that Switzerland has to offer, including an unexpected, unplanned chance to see the return of the cows from the upper pasture. the planned activities were outstanding and there was ample free time to enjoy on our own or with other members of the group. Overall a great trip.

"The entire tour was filled with "wow" moments. In no particular order of favoritism: 1)The beauty of the Swiss Alps. 2) The wonderful group of people on the tour really made the tour special. We hope it will lead to some lasting friendships and possible future tours. 3) Yorick, our tour guide, was outstanding from his planning, execution and his sense of humor. He truly added to the quality of the tour. 4) hiking in the Alps and participating in activities with other group members."

You never know who you're going to spend the next two weeks with, but our entire group seemed to totally get the Rick Steves ethos. We really enjoyed getting to know all of the others in the group. I had no expectations for this tour as I had no ideas about Switzerland except Alps. We got Alps and more! There were several activities that better defined what it is to be Swiss for me, but I'm still left with the impression that Switzerland is an enigma.

"One of the last days we got a demonstration and tour of an alpenhorn craftsman's shop, and later we visited a small dairy farm and tasted some of the cheese and milk. I must say very good but could not go with outstanding for one critical reason. RS Tours focus is on being in the center of the "real" area regardless of how well or poor the hotel accommodations are. Well, The hotel in Luzern had no Air Conditioning. Our room was so hot that neither of us slept the 1st night and barely the 2nd night. It is impossible to soak in the culture or enjoy the area when a person is sleep deprived. Tour provided and an excellent view of key areas of Switzerland. It was an extremely well run and thought out lientery. We experienced many different activities from cooking, yodeling, chocolate making, to wine tasting. Several were activities that would have been difficult to arrange, if on your own. Timing between events was great. All transportation was flawless.

This was our first Rick Steves tour, and the overall experience was fantastic. The sights were wonderful, the activities were fun, and there was a good balance between free time and scheduled activities. We got a really comprehensive sense for Switzerland and what it means to be Swiss, and it was very interesting to see and experience a number of different Swiss regions on the tour. Our guide, Jade, was terrific, as was our driver, Roland, and our trip was enriched by our great tour group.

The itinerary was excellent , albeit a bit busy. I enjoyed the stops that involved immersive cultural experiences such as yodeling, alphorn maker, cheese farmer, and everything Swiss with Orcine. I will more quickly forget some of the highway stops. The hotels were all centrally located and very clean. The food was one area that could use a step up. While the hotel breakfasts were excellent, the dinners, with a few exceptions, could have better choices. The guide, Tony, was 6 out of 5.

This was my sixth Rick Steves Tour and everyone was uniquely different. While Switzerland is very expensive the beauty of the country, especially the Bernese Oberland area is one of my favorite places in all of the world. The majestic Alps, meadows, waterfalls, and cows wearing bells are beyond my ability to express in words. Mirjam our tour guide was exceptional, the other tour members friendly and great travel companions, and the weather allowed for a great overall experience.

"The time at the Cailler chocolate factor when we got to design our own chocolate bars. I was thinking that the apron with the company logo on it was nice and was hoping to buy one in the gift shop. A couple minutes later the chocolatier said we could keep our aprons. A reminder to me that I need to count my blessings even the simple $20 ones and more importantly the greater ones like spending two weeks in a beautiful European country with the love of my life. Of course hiking in the Alps."

The itinerary was good in that we experienced enough of Switzerland to see different regions, languages, city and country life. I gravitate toward to mountains so enjoyed the Zermat, Apenzell and Murran towns tremendously. The comprehensive approach of showing and discussing how life and history of each area of the country compare and contrast with our home country are welcome and a major reason I like Rick Steves tours. Nico, our tour guide was top notch and made the tour very good.

"The town of Murran and the views from Shilthorn gondola are breathtaking and capture why I wanted to travel again to Switzerland! My wife and I were looking for a tour that would be physically active. We also wanted a tour that had both structured time and also allowed for time on our own to explore. This tour offered a fantastic overview of Switzerland. We were surrounded by its natural beauty and immersed in its distinct cultures. From pristine lakes to mountain peaks, cheese to chocolate, we made the most of 12 days in the country. Our guide, Ben, told us on our first night together to prepare to be "awed" and the tour did not disappoint. This is a full and active tour. Any stop could have warranted an extra day--but that would have required an extra week.

"This tour offered a wealth of wow experiences. It's hard to pick just one. So how about two? With the Jungfrau and Matterhorn and scenic lakes and chocolate and cheese, wow, it's a gem. What this Rick Steves tour of Switzerland did is wrap all of that and add history and context and culture into an experience that both informs and delights. You experience the German, the French, and the Italian parts of Switzerland, learn the foundations of its democracy and secret sauce that makes the whole far greater than the parts -- and the parts are really great on their own.

"Wow moments? The whole freakin' trip was a wow moment. But here is tiny story: We visit an alphorn maker. Charming, yes, not the same sort of wow as say the Schilthorn and tinkling cowbells on a hike. And our guide, Ben, asks if anybody wants to play this wooden bugle thingy. "How about you Mike? You play a horn and you're from Austria, I mean Australia, wanna give it a try?" And Mike toots around saying "where is a 'g'... got it" and then goes to town. Wow. Amazing. Tears in my eyes. "That the scenery was postcard perfect! From atop the medieval wall overlooking the town and lake in Lucerne; to the snow capped Apline vistas in flowery meadows; and on down to the meditteranean look and feel of Lakes Lugano and Geneva, the beautiful views just kept topping each other."

Charlie, our guide was so great. The tour was well organized and Charlie and driver David kept up on the best routes to avoid delays and give us the most scenic views.

Well-organized and well-rounded tour covering the unique history and culture of the Swiss people with 3 different linguistic regions - German, Italian and French, making us feel we were in those European countries. It was fascinating to learn their country is governed by a 7 person committee! Our guide, Tony, was super fun, personable and helped our friendly group bond from the first meeting! We were Rick's ideal group - a "merry band of travelers"! This was my 14th tour & one of my top 3!!

"I loved it so much - visiting the Fortress Fürigen, hiking the Ebenalp in Appenzell, a yodeling lesson from a master, making Risotto in Lugano. Making chocolate from a chocolatier was an exciting experience. Hiking in Mürren, breakfast at the Schilthorn with clear sunny skies. Also we saw the Matterhorn in Zermatt on a sunny day. The Einstein Museum in Bern in free time was very interesting. So much to recommend this beautiful, mountainous country where hiking is the national pastime!"

When To Go & Weather

Any time between May and September is a good time to visit Switzerland. However, the months of May, June, and September are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Summer, while the most crowded, has the best weather.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Zürich International Airport (ZRH). Zürich is a 90-minute train ride to Luzern (where the tour begins) and a 75-minute train ride from Bern (where the tour ends). You can also arrange to fly into Zürich and out of Bern (BRN) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Switzerland guidebook.
