Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Barcelona
Barcelona, the proud capital of Catalunya, may be the most festive city on the Mediterranean. We'll meet at 5 p.m. at our centrally located hotel for an orientation meeting — then we'll join the party with a stroll through our surprise-filled, people-packed neighborhood before having dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.
Day 2: Gaudí and Modernista Eixample
Today is devoted to the swirling architecture of Antoni Gaudí and Barcelona's Modernisme movement. We'll stroll through the Eixample neighborhood, visiting the Block of Discord, on our way to tour the greatest work of Barcelona's master builder — the towering, dizzying Sagrada Família. Afterwards, you'll be free to explore more Art Nouveau delights throughout the city.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.
Day 3: Barri Gòtic and Picasso
Today we'll visit the Picasso Museum, Europe's best collection of Picasso paintings, where we'll trace the story of this hometown boy-genius' art as he evolved from a kid who painted like an adult…to an adult who painted like a kid. We'll end our tour in Barcelona's maze-like Gothic Quarter, exploring from its Roman foundations to the spires of its candle-, relic- (and geese-!) strewn cathedral. This evening we'll toast to our last night in Barcelona with dinner together.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.
Day 4: Park Güell and a Speedy Train to Madrid
We'll start today with a panoramic bus tour of Barcelona, leading to Gaudí's famed Park Güell. Then it's "all aboard" for one of Europe's speediest trains to Madrid. Upon arrival, we'll meet our bus for a tour of Madrid's major monuments and classy boulevards. Once we've settled into our hotel in the heart of Madrid, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk, ending with a tapas-style dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 3 hours. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Madrid.
Day 5: Madrid's Royal Palace
Today, we'll take a historical walking tour starting at the very center of Madrid: the bustling Puerta del Sol. From there we'll walk to — and through — the sumptuously decorated Royal Palace. With 2,000 rooms, tons of luxurious tapestries, and a king's ransom of chandeliers, this is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. This evening we'll enjoy a swirling performance of flamenco, before setting you free for dinner on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.
Day 6: Masterpieces of Madrid
This morning we'll tour the Reina Sofía, Spain's greatest modern art museum and home of Picasso's Guernica. Then we'll make our way to the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you'll see paintings by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and others. The rest of the afternoon is yours to stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid's most popular park) or do a little shopping.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.
Day 7: Toledo
A short bus ride after breakfast will take us to Spain's old capital city of Toledo (and back in time about 500 years). We'll take a traffic-free walking tour that includes Toledo's magnificent cathedral, the historic Tránsito Synagogue, and El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé Chapel. This afternoon you'll have time to enjoy the winding medieval streets of Toledo. We'll catch the bus back to Madrid for our final dinner together to share travel memories and toast new friends. Salud!
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Madrid.
Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Madrid's airport is an easy bus or taxi ride away — or you may want to continue your Iberian adventures on your own. Hasta luego!

This was my 4th Rick Steves Tour, and my overall tour experience as always far exceeded my expectations. Our talented and gifted director and guide, Fredrico was excellent and gave life and meaning to our overall experience. His knowledge of art and history and the way he explained it was exceptional.

This is our first experience with a tour, and we had a good time. We were able to go to many places we otherwise wouldn't have gone to, with information from guides we wouldn't have known, and with the luxury of not having to plan it out ourselves. My wife and I did find ourselves out of sync with the rest of the group at times, preferring to go slower or faster, preferring different kinds of food, or wanting to meet more local Spaniards.

At risk of being a "grump" our tour guide Federico wasn't our cup of tea. His overly dramatic/theatrical presentations got a bit old. He also walked so fast that the group was spread out over one or two blocks and the whispers didn't extend that far. Spending 35 minutes standing listening to him lecture took time away from exploring other parts of the Sofia Museum.

Our tour was wonderful. Both Barcelona and Madrid were enjoyable, and the high-speed train connection was as well. I especially liked our tour guide Frederico who explained the artwork at the Sofia Reina and Prado so that we understood the pieces and why the artists were pushing new boundaries with their artistry at the time they were created. The group we traveled with was a lot of fun, too!

Typical Rick Steve’s tour with a variety of museums, neighborhoods and tour guides. The local tour guides on this trip were excellent, especially the guide in Toledo who had an excellent message. Federico, who was both our group guide, and our local Madrid guide is one of a kind and gave us what I call the “Performance of Madrid”. Barcelona and Madrid are very different cities which added to the experience.

This was our first ever group tour so getting used to that element was part of our first impression. It was nice to have everything managed for us so we could relax and enjoy the experience. We did appreciate the time to go our own way, particularly for meals, but the group was pleasant, for the most part. We might try the Own Way option next. The itinerary was great and luckily the weather only impacted one day.

Tour: 10/06/24
Overall rating:
The tour provided short overviews of 3 great cities in Spain. Unlike most tours we have been on, this involved few bus or connecting rides to the next destination. While we enjoyed the group (as always), the shortness of the tour and fewer moments to chat and get acquainted as we traveled did make the tour less of a "family". Great museums, cathedrals, and particularly charming Toledo were memorable. Our guides varied in quality somewhat more than previous tours, but we did enjoy it overall.

Spain was not a country I dreamed of my whole life but I think it should be on everyone's must do list. The history of Barcelona and Madrid are very different and equally interesting. "I had a favorite "wow" moment from each city. In Barcelona my must do was to put my toes in the Mediterranean. The beach was not crowded, the air was hot and the water was cold. This was my 3rd Rick Steves tour and I enjoyed it very much. I would suggest getting to Barcelona a few days early as I found that there was much to see and do there. Fredrico also looked out for us and helped us navigate some health concerns early in the tour which was greatly appreciated.

This was my 5th Rick Steves' trip but my first one that concentrated on cities, utilized just 2 hotels, and it exceeded my expectations! Agustin was kind, efficient and approachable. Our city guides were a delight as well, and Frederico had the whole group hanging on his every word. Just when we were starting to tire in the museums (even as amazing as they were), it was time for a coffee break! Great itinerary and amazing group dinners. Guernica still has me under its power.

As others suggested, we attended an organ concert in the Palau de Musica-incredible building with more details than I could take in. "

This was our fifth RS tour and it, like the previous ones was very well planned and executed. Luis did an outstanding job of welcoming the group and providing specific directions on each day's events. his commentaries during our outings were fun and very informative. "There are so many great moments. Walking into and seeing a rehearsal at Ciutat Vella theater, in Barcelona. It’s a beautiful theater with a glass ceiling like the Bon Marche department store in Paris. Parts of the old Roman Wall from thousands of years ago. My lasting impression will be some of Gaudi’s design and works. I would like to remember him as a man who was forward thinking. Love the thought he incorporated damaged old broken tile into his design, recycling them into great building."

"I was anxious to see Sagrada Familia. When I first saw it from the street, I was astounded by all the detail and biblical stories on the exterior, but when I entered the cathedral, I was amazed by the height and massiveness of the columns (giant tree branches) and the light shining through the stained glass windows on the east and west sides. I felt so small in this light filled church. "

I felt like I was getting a college level art history lesson every day. The professional guides gave us political/social/personal context for the art, why it mattered, and how it shaped everything from individual pieces to collective movements. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour due primarily to our excellent guide, David Gillison, who embodies the Rick Steves' spirit and philosophy of travel--embracing the culture, accepting and understanding the nature of the people, allowing oneself to become a temporary citizen of that place. It was a great tour and I enjoyed everything we did, but it often felt rushed. It was frustrating when we stood outside a building or shop, was told how great it was, and then hustled away without going inside. This was particularly frustrating in Barcelona, when we couldn’t get back or find it again. Having done several RS tours, I don’t remember this happening before. Group dinners were good, but little variety-all similar tapas, and no paella, but the wine and company were great!!

David was awesome, so caring and compassionate, he went above and beyond. I feel like the tour wasn't really "the best" of Barcelona. Very heavy on Gaudi sites. On the last day in Barcelona, we saw several sites on the way out of town that would have been amazing to spend more time at, and know more about. The marina/beach, the Olympic site, the incredible view and the amazing art museum at the top of the hill, where we were given 10 mins to take a picture or two.

This is the first tour I’ve taken and it was the right amount of structured and free time. Having afternoons and in some cases evenings free was helpful to catch my breath and absorb the day’s experience. This tour was very active (which I appreciate) and the breaks were welcome for this reason as well.

"Really enjoyed the visits to the Prado Museum, the Picasso Museum (Barcelona) and the Reina Sofia Museum, where we saw Guernica, a painting I’ve wanted to see. Also enjoyed spending the day in Toledo and walking the winding streets."

We have traveled often in Europe and South America, but this is our first tour. We chose it given our love of Rick's tour books and the fact we did not have the energy to plan it ourselves for 8 days in Spain. We were very pleased especially with our Tour Guide Federico who was fantastic. He is very passionate about role. Highly entertaining (he sang O Sole Mio at our Anniverary dinner!! His set up to the history of each city was very engaging. He's the best!

"Sagrada Família was just amazing during the Barcelona tours. Federico also arranged a special, not on the schedule, to attend the Spanish & Flamenco Guitar Concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana. Just a very special treat, thank you Federico for making that happen."

Fatima winds we did two tours and I'm not sure what this evaluation is for because it could be for the Portugal trip or it could be for the Spain trip but we liked our tour guide Fatima little bit better on the Portugal trip and Federico came alive when we actually ended up in Madrid and he was very animated and entertaining

What an amazing tour! I truly feel that I could not have gotten the full Barcelona and Madrid experience without taking a Rick Steves tour. The history learned from the guided tours is something I never would have gotten wandering around by myself. Fredrico was an INCREDIBLE guide. He cares so much for the people of Spain, and his tour group. He was hilarious, easy to listen to, and just a kind soul. We felt so lucky to have him as a guide!

"We were walking the streets of Madrid, and all of a sudden Fredrico walks up to a beautiful string quartet, whispers asking if they know a song, and they all start playing and singing this gorgeous song “O Sole Mio”! We gathered such a large crowd and the tour group had so much fun! Such a spontaneous moment!"

I'm so glad I joined this tour! I enjoyed the people, the agenda, very nice hotels and the guides were tremendous. I learned so much. This 8 day tour was in the middle of a two week trip to Spain. Having everything organized for me was a treat. And I liked that our days were partially scheduled but we always had free time to do what we wanted as well. We didn't always move as a pack, we could do our own thing at our own pace every afternoon.

Good tour. Barcelona is lovely. Madrid has a Spanish NYC vibe, and Toledo is fascinating although overrun by tourists (Yes I see the irony). Felt that what we saw in Barcelona was spot on. In Madrid loved the royal palace and the Prado, not sure why the guide is only allowed to show you the Guernica in the Reina Sophia. Meals were family style and decent. Hotel Gran Via in Barcelona is very nice but rooms and batch are comically small.

Jorge was an excellent tour guide and was clearly well experienced with dealing with groups. The local tour guides were also really good. Two of them stood out: 1) Anna Maria (I think that was her name) - very sweet who lead us around Toledo 2) Federico who was outstanding and made a lot of the art tours come alive. Food was also very good with plenty of wine. Jorge gave a lot of good local recommendations for our nights off.

This was our 2nd Rick Steves tour of Spain. The first one was in 2011 with Nigel and was two weeks long. This one was just 8 days of Barcelona, Madrid and a Toledo. We took our 17 and 19-yr old granddaughters with us and were pleasantly surprised to see the group was diverse and younger than the typical RS tour group. We took a side trip to Montserrat a day early. Our guide, Jorge, was very energetic and knowledgeable. Overall, it was just the right amount of time to spend with teenagers.

Our first trip, so expectations were somewhat non-existent. However, by the end of our tour, I can say that this trip was so marvelous, in every single aspect imaginable - the other people on the trip, the tour guide (s), the sites, the pace, the restaurants that were chosen and particularly the hotels we stayed at, transportation - that we will absolutely do another Rick Steve's tour.

"Visiting the Sagrada Familia. Though not a religious man, this church was a truly spiritual and enlightening experience. To learn of the vision that Antonio Gaudi had in designing this basillica, his affinity for the common man in this vision, the environmental concerns he used as a guide in construction, the various materials used for construction, the play of light on the stained glass, one marvels at the sheer genius of the man. Information from our local guide, Ana, were truly insightful."

Overall experience was good. We really enjoyed our guide. The hotels were wonderful. All of the planned experiences went off well without a hitch. I would have liked to have some more description of other artists that were in the museums we saw like Dali. We were in this museum with all of the great art work there and only saw the one painting, El Guernica. Would also like to have advance notice of amount of food that rick steves was providing so I could plan my food intake for the day.

"The spanish history with the el guernica painting. I also liked the flamenco dancing as I am a dancer. Would have liked some background on the dance before the performance though so I would know what I was seeing. liked the tapas although it was a lot of food and I would have eaten less during the day if I had realized there was so much food. I had trouble planning my food in Spain. "

Every intricate detail and the majestic tree-like spires left us in awe. The mesmerizing stained-glass windows added an ethereal touch. When To Go & Weather
Barcelona and Madrid are lively cities to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with good weather, lighter crowds, and long days. Visiting between November and March offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cooler weather.

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Barcelona (BCN) and out of Madrid (MAD) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Spain.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options to get to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Spain guidebook.
