Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Scotland
We'll gather at our hotel in Inverness at 4 p.m. for a "Welcome to Scotland" meeting. Then we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk and get acquainted with one another over dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Inverness.
Day 2: Castles and Culloden
This morning we'll enjoy a panoramic cruise of Loch Ness (monster sightings not guaranteed) before disembarking at the dramatic lochside ruins of Urquhart Castle. Then we're off to still-lived-in Cawdor Castle, where we'll stroll through manicured gardens and enjoy afternoon tea. We'll end our day together with a tour of the evocative Culloden Battlefield, where Bonnie Prince Charlie's defeat in 1746 marked the beginning of the end of the Highland clan system. Tonight is a great opportunity to enjoy some traditional music in one of Inverness' many pubs.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep in Inverness.
Day 3: The Rugged, Romantic Highlands
Today we'll explore more of the scenic and romantic Highlands as we travel to Perthshire. On the way we'll stop in Speyside, happy home to half of all Scotland's whisky distilleries and one of its few remaining woolen mills. We'll tour a local distillery and sample a wee dram, then head across town to experience the fine art of weaving. After lunch together, we'll visit a local sheep farm to learn more about Scotland's wool industry and marvel at the talented sheepdogs in action. This evening we'll enjoy dinner together and meet a Scottish bagpiper for some music and a lesson on this unusual instrument's history.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.
Day 4: Crannogs and Hermits
This morning we'll learn about the Iron Age people who first farmed these lands and built Scotland's unique crannogs — prehistoric, thatched-roofed defensive huts built on piers out over the lochs. After lunch together, we're off to the charming village of Dunkeld on the River Tay, where we'll have a guided tour of its medieval cathedral before enjoying free time to poke around town. This afternoon, we'll take a walk to the Hermitage, where we'll hear about Scottish Romanticism amidst Black Linn Falls and towering forest. After time to relax, we'll regroup this evening for dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.
Day 5: Charming St. Andrews
Today we're off to St. Andrews, Scotland's oldest university town and a mecca for golfers worldwide. You'll have time to explore the ruins of St. Andrews' medieval cathedral, watch duffers playing the Old Course — considered the birthplace of golf — and enjoy lunch. Then, we'll cross the famous Firth of Forth on our way to Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh. Your guide will orient you to our lively neighborhood before setting you free for the rest of the evening.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 6: Edinburgh's Historic Heart
This morning we'll take a walking tour of Edinburgh's old town, winding our way up the Royal Mile with its wealth of historic buildings, quaint shops, narrow lanes, and hidden courtyards — then onto Grassmarket and Greyfriars cemetery. We'll set you free for the afternoon and evening to visit imposing Edinburgh Castle (entry ticket provided) at your leisure to see the Scottish crown jewels and soak up the dramatic views from this military stronghold and birthplace of the city.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 7: The Politics of Scotland
Since the days of William Wallace, the Scots have chafed under English rule, and over the centuries Scotland's drive for independence hasn't waned. Today we'll explore the complicated relationship between Scotland and England and learn about the modern independence movement that came with self-rule. Then we'll take a look at the "other side" with a visit to the King's official residence in Edinburgh, the elegant Palace of Holyroodhouse. The remainder of the day is yours to explore more of this regal city. Tonight we'll share memories of Scotland and toast new friends at our final dinner together. Slàinte!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Edinburgh's airport and train station are easy connections from our neighborhood. Glasgow is one hour away by train; London is 90 minutes by air. For those tempted to continue their trip, Edinburgh is a great jumping-off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Turas math dhut! (Happy travels!)

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Heart of Scotland in 8 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…
- Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
- Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
- Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
- After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
- Walk up steep hills in Edinburgh and at Urquhart Castle.

My experience was derailed on the 4th night, due to the "wonky" bed at the Loch Rannoch Hotel when I was gripped with an acute bout of sciatica. I spent the next 2 days unable to eat due to nausea and had little ability to see much of the sights or participate in the scheduled excursions because of the intense pain. Overall, I thought the tour was good, though. I thought it interesting there was so much free time the last 2 days when previously we were kept pretty busy.

"The Edinburgh castle was a big wow for me visually, but I was unable to attend the castle tour due to the extreme pain I was experiencing."

I loved everything about the tour and having Jeanie as our guide was fabulous. I felt like there was a good balance of being with the group and having time on our own to do what we wanted. It's nice to have other guide's as well like we did for the Edinburgh Castle and Culloden.

"I felt like all of the events that were selected for us were outstanding! You do a great job selecting top notch tours for us to partake in and the quality/education that we receive makes it that much more rich. One of my favorites was the Scottish Bagpiper who performed for us. She was an absolute darling and her Grandson was adorable as well."

October was a great time to be in Scotland. The weather held no surprises in terms of extremes in temperature or precipitation. We had a good balance of structured time and free time. Our tour guide was helpful with good suggestions for free time and dining options. After a week on our RSE London tour, we enjoyed the more relaxed pace of the Scotland tour.

Personally, I realized this was not the mode of travel for me, but it was very enjoyable none the less. Saw and experienced an ample array of sites with an engaging and ultra-knowledgeable guide, Ross. Also made some new friends with whom some future travel plans are being considered. I admit, my physical capabilities hindered my 100% participation, but I have no regrets and I feel the tour was well worth the price and my personal effort.

"Silly, but I could have stayed the whole day at the sheep and border collie demo. I also loved seeing the countryside, the hills, the Lochs and, especially, the mystical looking woods. Edinburgh was lovely--wished I could have made it to some pubs, but that was my choice to rest in the evening. "

Overall, the tour was good. we were presented with more information than anyone could possibly retain. Guides were excellent, as were accommodations, and transportation. Schedule was packed and left little time or energy for personal exploration. I was disappointed that some scheduled events were dropped, and that cancelations weren't anticipated. Replacement events were okay but were clearly just that, last minute replacements.

We loved the tour and the places on the tour. Our guide was the most knowledgeable guide we have had from all our tours and all have been excellent. She had a treat from each area for us which was a nice touch. Our tour guide’s passion was contagious. We enjoy the extra touches Rick Steve’s tours provide like the bagpiper (not just any bagpiper!). The tour of the Woolen mill and guides were all amazing. We highly recommend this tour for history, culture, views and great food and people.

My first Rick Steves tour, was looking forward to Ann as tour guide but a change was made a few weeks before the start so I was a little worried as to the replacement. My worries were needless, Jodie was an amazing guide, her historical knowledge added to the educational aspects and her joyful personality was contagious. I would have liked more time at some of the sites but overall managing 29 adults on a bus and on walking tours was a great experience and would recommend a RS tour!

"There were so many “wow” moments for me but the overall beauty of the Highlands were what I fell in love with. I could see myself living there, except driving on the single lane roads would take some time getting used to! The history of the land and the people was remarkable!"

Our tour guide, Jodie was the best!! From my understanding she was not scheduled to be our original tour guide. However, I couldn't imagine anyone doing it better than Jodie. Her passion and love for Scotland was infectious and endearing. She deserves a raise! The Highlands were amazing. The small day trips were well planned and executed. You'll find the best toilet pitstops in the Highlands. Looking back, I would've traded one less day in Edinburgh for an additional day around the Highlands.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"Seeing Edinburgh Castle up close and personal! Nothing topped it. However, floating the Loch Ness, and sleeping with Jamie from Outlander (well, he was staying at the same resort we were staying at- just sounds more exciting when I say it the other way.) The construction of the castles and cathedrals...WOW! All the history...on and on. "

First off, our guide, Helen, was excellent, knowledgeable, fun, kind, and helpful! The hotels were great, though I know some were frustrated by our electronic modern hotel rooms, I loved ours and figured out how the lights, shade, heat worked fairly quickly. Frankly, I thought it was cool! I enjoyed having the kitchenette. Touring was always interesting and I feel I learned a lot.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"So many great times, but going to the weaving factory wowed me in how it all worked, plus the fact that the machines are mechanical and so old, yet kept in good working order by the mechanics and fabricators who have to make new parts when old ones break. And the handiwork that is still done making sure each piece woven is just right when finished. The woven pieces are so lovely but well beyond what I can afford. That’s fine with me. I enjoy seeing lovely things but don’t need to own them!"

Had a wonderful time. Liz, our guide, was great and took good care of us. Only real negative was our last hotel in Edinburgh, Wilde Aparthotel Grassmarket. The hotel is modern and hi-tech, but the room was tiny and the king bed was stuck in a corner so that one person had to crawl over the other to get in. Bad experience. Outstanding in all regards thanks to our tour leader, Liz. Her background as an educator was apparent as we visited highlights of Scotland and learned the history to make the experience even more impressive and meaningful. Our collective "needs" were always taken care of by Liz, with wonderful group meals, yummy snacks, vista views, bathroom breaks, advice for free time, and going to plan B when weather disrupted plan A. Her tour was well organized, never felt rushed, giving lifetime memories.

This was our 8th Rick Steves' tour, so we had high expectations, met by a fantastic guide named Liz who was knowledgeable, well organized, flexible and fun. It rained often, but we were able to do most of what is on the itinerary. One change was in Edinburgh because there was a royal family member staying at Palace of Holyroodhouse, which closed it to the public. We instead toured the decommissioned royal yacht, the Britannia, as an excellent substitute. The tour provided food was also great.

"Scotland's incredible scenery, especially in the highlands, provided many wow moments. My favorite activity was visiting the Crannog Centre where they have artifacts from pre-historic iron age people who lived in houses built on stilts out over the loch. They have taken great care to re-create a small village to demonstrate how the people lived. I also loved the border collies herding sheep, even in the pouring rain! Bottle feeding orphaned lambs and sweet puppies was icing on the cake, "

Taking this tour was a trip down memory lane for us as my husband and I had not been back to Scotland together since 2006! It was a joy taking this tour with an interesting group of travelers and having Liz as our wonderful guide. Liz took care of us from the get go, always eager to share about her home country, taking the time to sit with each one of us at meals, sending out the next day’s itinerary by email, and always being approachable and inclusive. She made the tour extra special!

"Panoramic cruise of Loch Ness and seeing the ruins of Urquart Castle, then Cawdor castle and its gorgeous gardens followed by afternoon tea all on the first day! Day 2 we enjoyed the Woolen Mill tour before landing at our stunning hotel in the Highlands with Gillie the bagpiper after dinner. Charming St Andrew’s, delicious food, treats from Liz on the bus, and ending in exciting Edinburgh for 2 nights. This is a packed tour with lots of steps and walking, even some rain, but we loved it."

A great time for our first vacation tour overseas! We learned so much on the 8-day tour about Scotland, the history, the people, the geology, the food, the politics, the products (whisky, wool, golf), how ways to be good tourists (including using public transit on a regular basis). We augmented the tour with a few days beforehand in Glasgow, Oban, Mull, and Iona, and in St. Andrews afterwards, as we wanted to experience a little bit on our own. Our tour guides, Liz and Paul were top-notch.

"Which one? Looking down the River Ness in Inverness, learning there were 15 churches in our line-of-sight? The castles? The boat ride down Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle? The Culloden battlefield? The Whisky tour at Glen Moray, Loch Lomond or Loch Tummel and the Queen's View? Seeing St. Andrews and the Old Course & Links in person? Or Edinburgh, with its volcanic base, Castle, Crown Jewels, Calton Hill, HMY Brittanica? I think... the geologic history and how it shaped events in Scotland"

It was informative, breathtakingly beautiful and fun. Our tour guide, Jodie Stalker, was the highlight of the trip. She was always positive, energetic, got us where we needed to be, and most importantly - she was a local from Edinburgh. This made a big difference in the experiences she shared. We were taken care of

The other was the day we could stay back at the hotel in Pitlochry- Kinloch Rannoch, instead of take the bus for other activities. I stayed back and took lovely walks around the Loch. This was our second tour within a 3 week period. Previously, we took the 7 day Ireland tour with Pascal and took a week off prior to the Scotland tour. We visited Belfast for 3 days and 4 days in St. Andrews before catching up with the tour in Inverness. I really enjoyed the tour in Scotland, the fast pace of the tour at times was tiring but understood that prior to going on it. Again, a very good overview of Scotland, the history and customs of the country were covered effectively.

"Time in St. Andrews. As an avid golfer, I would prefer more time spent there, maybe allowing an overnight so a round of golf could be played. The dog trainer was a highlight a s well as the time spend at Loch Ronnoch. Quite a beautiful setting. I guess that is three "Wows"."

The tour is well designed starting at Inverness, exploring the Highlands and ending Edinburgh allowing for many areas to explore on our own. Our guide was exceptional at sharing the Scotland political challenges and the complicated history of the Scot leadership changes.

The 8 day Scotland Tour was well planned and orchestrated. No doubt about it, the tour guide (Ross) is what made it so outstanding. Ross is a local Scottish tour guide who added colorful and interesting details and stories while on the tour bus. I believe Ross is what made it what it was.

This was my first tour. I was happy to have decided on a Rick Steve’s tour with its smaller numbers than many. I’ve been a fan of his PBS show and felt confident about the quality of tour guides and I was delighted with ours, Jodie. I appreciated all that we saw, and also the free time. Stays of at least 2 nights was a factor in my booking the tour and I was grateful for that. We did more in a day than I would on my own, but having all organized and being so well cared for made that okay

When To Go & Weather
Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Scotland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. While Scotland never quite feels crowded, July and August are considered peak season, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).
