Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Portugal
We'll gather at our Lisbon hotel at 4 p.m. for a short meeting, followed by an orientation walk through our neighborhood and a "Welcome to Portugal" dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.
Day 2: Neighborhoods of Lisbon
This morning we'll take a walking tour through Lisbon's colorful downtown neighborhoods — the Bairro Alto, the Alfama, and the Baixa. Along the way we'll learn about "village" Lisbon's neighborhood life, the poetry of the revered Fernando Pessoa, and Portugal's "Carnation Revolution," which peacefully ended nearly five decades of fascist rule in 1974. You'll have the rest of your afternoon free to visit any of Lisbon's "niche" museums (tile, fado, port wine, and other Portuguese specialties). Tonight we'll regroup and enjoy a soulful fado performance with dinner.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.
Day 3: Seafaring Belém and the Gulbenkian
We'll begin our day with a bus tour through Lisbon to its seafaring Belém District, home to many of the city's most historic buildings. Sticking close to the waterfront, we'll learn about Portugal's golden age of exploration at the heroic Monument to the Discoveries, and how faith, money, and a knack for sailing combined to build the dazzling Monastery of Jerónimos. Then we'll take in the view from Edward VII Park before ending at the world-class Gulbenkian Museum, where we'll see how an international oil tycoon assembled a priceless art collection spanning 5,000 years. You'll have the evening free to continue to explore the museum or return to Lisbon for dinner on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Lisbon.
Day 4: Historic Évora
Today we'll head east to the laid-back Alentejo countryside and the history-rich university town of Évora. We'll take a walking tour of Évora's preserved-in-whitewash old section, marveling at its Corinthian-columned Roman Temple and its macabre Chapel of Bones. As you'll discover in your free afternoon and evening, Évora has a world-apart feel to it that really connects you with traditional Portugal.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Évora.
Day 5: Olives, Oaks, and Óbidos
This morning begins with a memorable visit to a working farm and estate. We'll have a chance to meet farming locals and taste-test their olive oil. Then we'll wander through their forest of cork oaks, learning how the bark is harvested and how it's being regulated today. We'll cap off our visit with lunch together, including some of the estate's wines. This afternoon we'll follow the sun as we make our way to the medieval walled town of Óbidos. Upon arrival we'll take an orientation walk through the perfectly preserved cobblestone streets and learn why this is known as Portugal's "wedding city."
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Óbidos.
Day 6: Royal Intrigue, Alcobaça, and Nazaré
We'll begin today with a visit to Alcobaça to tour the ornate Baroque-Gothic Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria, where we'll hear the star-crossed story of King Pedro and his doomed mistress, Inês. Later we'll enjoy some fun in the sun in the old coastal fishing village of Nazaré. Splash in the waters of the Atlantic, sample the local specialty — barnacles — or take the funicular up to the historic Sítio neighborhood to enjoy its sweeping cliff-top views. This evening we'll return to Óbidos for dinner on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Óbidos.
Day 7: Batalha and Fátima
We'll continue our journey north, stopping in Batalha to visit its grand Monastery of Santa María, a symbol of Portuguese pride and its victory (with help from English archers) over Spanish domination 600 years ago. Then we'll visit the nearby pilgrimage site of Fátima — a favorite of Pope John Paul II — where three children shared controversial visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917. This afternoon, our destination is Portugal's historic capital of Coimbra, where we'll end our day with dinner together in the heart of the Old Town.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Coimbra.
Day 8: Classic Coimbra
This morning we'll twist through Coimbra's maze of narrow lanes to its steeped-in-tradition, 700-year-old university. The palatial university library — with 30,000 books from the 18th century — is like nothing you've seen before. After our visit, the afternoon is yours to make your own discoveries in Coimbra. Tonight we'll rendezvous for a performance of Coimbra's unique style of fado…more likely devoted to revolutionary student ideals than lost love.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Coimbra.
Day 9: Douro Wine Country
We'll drive to Portugal's most famous wine-making region today: the lush, green Douro Valley, where we'll visit an old family estate and winery (quinta) with spectacular views of the surrounding valley. It's a perfect chance to learn all about the proud art of making fine port — and taste it too! Later in the afternoon we'll make our way to our hotel, with all evening free to relax and savor the sunset.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in the Douro Valley.
Day 10: Vineyard Views and Porto
Today we'll travel through terraced wine country on our way to the port city of Porto. On arrival in this rustic Portuguese San Francisco, a savvy guide will show us how to explore the city through our taste buds with a sampling of delicious local cuisine, teaching us about history, architecture, and culture along the way. We'll end our day with a relaxing cruise on the Douro River (weather permitting).
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Boat: ¾ hour. Sleep in Porto.
Day 11: Savoring Proud Porto
This morning we'll take a walking tour of Porto's riverfront Ribeira district, including the lavish rooms of its Stock Exchange Palace, the exquisitely gilded Church of São Francisco, and São Bento train station. Then you'll have time to wander on your own through Porto's lively city center — or seek out some more sipping at an old port-wine lodge. This evening we'll enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Saúde!
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Porto.
Day 12: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Your guide will help steer you to Porto's airport, which is an easy metro or taxi ride away. Or you may want to stay for further Portuguese adventures on your own. Adeus!

This tour was amazing. Our guide Fatima was a delight. She was organized, thoughtful, dynamic and is passionate about her country (Portugal). I appreciated the nice balance of experiences between cities, villages and the countryside. Great food, wine and welcoming locals was a treat. Now I know why so many expats have chosen Portugal.

"Convenient timing of comfort stops. I too have some prostate issues and was very relieved of restroom accessibility. Otherwise, the cleanliness of the cities we visited and how so many of the Portuguese understood English. I didn’t realize how the dictatorship impacted the culture and how the old ways are being clung on too. It will be very interesting to see the changes that will inevitably occur in the next 5 and 10 years…"

"My favorite wow moment was probably our visit to the cork farm. Not only was it interesting to see how cork was harvested but the extraction of pignoli nuts from pine cones was an eye opener. I have a new appreciation of why a small bottle of pignoli nuts is so costly. And the lunch was fabulous- both the food and the ambiance. A bonus for those of us at our table was that Sophia sat with us and we were able to get an even better insight into the workings and philosophy of her family’s farm"

We thoroughly enjoyed our our guide, Maria, who not only provided a wealth of information throughout our travels, but did so with humor and often a personal touch. This was our fourth Rick Steve's tour and it was excellent. Claudia our tour guide was very personable and organized. From fast paced Lisbon to the bridges of Porto we saw it all. Claudia did a great job educating us about the history of Portugal and she weaved in some of her own personal family experiences. We had a great group, always on time and ready for adventure. Definitely pack your walking shoes. We logged between 12-16,000 steps per day. This gave us permission for more pastries!

Portugal was a place I knew very little about and now it is so dear to me.

Favorite "WOW" moment
"I have a new appreciation for the cork found in a wine bottle. While one can argue if it is the best closure device, no one can dispute the time and effort needed to produce the product. Waiting 25+ years to get your first harvest, that is normally not of high enough quality to even make it into the bottle, then waiting another 9+ years to get the next harvest means this is not a crop you or your children get to enjoy but your grandchildren."

Too many "on your own" meals. Several people got sick on the tour - no isolation and optional masking made the non-sick ones fearful of getting sick (it was mostly intestinal). Two of the local tour guides were not too good.

Our guide John was very informative and fun. However, he did not react quickly when early in the trip a participant was sick on the bus. He did not tell anyone else or have the sick person wear a mask to contain the situation. This was my 9th Rick Steves Tour, which we coupled with the Basque Country tour back to back, and probably the best tour yet. The tour leader, Maria Jose, is the hardest working guide that we have had to date. You can tell she spends a lot of time to prepare for each day, including a lot of itinerary switches due to weather, which facilitated great outcomes. Great meals every day, but be sure to get reservations for your individual dinners.

"The cork farm tour and the Douro Valley winery tour (headlined by the grape stomping session) were top notch. However, the highlight was definitely eating on our own at A Nova Casa de Ramiro in Obidos. It's located 50 yards from the tour hotel Real d' Obidos. You will need reservations, request the "Rick Steves table" at the back window, and watch owner Pedro work his magic with patrons at the waiting room in the middle of the restaurant. Best restaurant meal in Portugal, I guarantee."

Portugal was lovely and the tour was well organized and well run. We were blessed with a good group of travelers. Our tour guide was excellent. The best moments were those specially curated by RS Tours - the vineyard, fado, the port tasting in Porto, the cork farm and the pottery factory. The bigger venues of Lisbon and Porto were uncomfortably overrun by tourists (not RST fault), but that's the difference between "very good" and "outstanding."

"Where to start? There were so many! It just seemed like there were little surprises and gems around every corner, Our guide, Maria.I think had a lot to do with that.literally providing treats.,lol. Every accommodation, it seemed was a wow moment..I would never have expected a pool...but there were 3 on our trip! And I took advantage of every one of them after a long, hard day of travel.Obidos! The Duro Valley! The Vineyard/winery/ lunch. The Cork farm! Every excursion was well planned ."

Tour guide Maria, had an excellent knowledge of Portugal history, she was organized, caring, and empathetic to all people in the group; we learned about the people, history, and culture of Portugal. The visits to the cork farm, vineyard, fado, and ceramic factory were an exceptional treat. We were able to meet several couples and had great discussions with them. The balance between time spent and benefit from each city and activity was well planned and executed.

What a wonderful meandering through the heart of Portugal! Maria, our guide, was so knowledgeable and fun - she wove the story of the country through history, people, places, food and wine. Never a dull moment, but also enough time for exploration to seek out even more 'curiosities' along the way. The group was lively and spirited, full of great like-minded 'buddies' whose love for travel was evident! The weather was perfect, and the people and guides we met along the way were generous and fun.

As has been our experience with Rick's tours, this was truly amazing. "Well, the views at every turn, whether urban or rural, were astounding; the tile production tour was mind-blowing; and the day at the winery felt somehow like going home to a place I had never been, the visit to the shrine in Fatima left our knees week and our minds reeling. I just don't have the words for what I saw and felt there. To use a term we learned on another RS tour, that is a very 'thin' place, very close to something that is hard to define."

The destinations were well selected and very interesting, but after about three hours of a tour, I have heard enough and need down time. Too much information is being layered upon layer so that it becomes meaningless. I loved the food while on past RS tours, but this time did not. Maybe it was just Portugal but I did not like all the cod and fish served. The group was the usual friendly people and Christina, our tour guide was very good, but long winded. Walks should not be a marathon.

I really liked and appreciated Fatima our tour guide as well as the local tour guides. The Portuguese people as a whole are warm, friendly and family oriented. Too much of the trip focused on Cathedrals, churches and monasteries for my taste and the accommodations were generally so so. The food was also so so generally speaking. The highlights were our visits to the winery, the ceramics factory, the local markets - I.e., interactions with the ‘everyday people’.

We were surprised by the slower pace of this tour (it was our third), which did not jive with what we were looking for. Previous tours had more of a mix of ages, with more younger and middle aged folks, while this particular tour skewed quite a bit older. While everyone was lovely, and I hope I am in as good shape when I'm 80, I do wish we were able to cover ground a bit more quickly. I am not sure if this was to accommodate everyone's pace, or if this particular tour was just a bit slower.

The sidewalks/plazas of Lisboa, the monasteries of Belem, Alcoabaca, and Bathala, the beach at Nazare, the oak cork forest, views of Douro valley, the massive spirituality of Fatima, the streets of Coimbra, and the picture-perfect, postcard loveliness of Obidos. The two sites that were the most unexpected were the Roman ruins at Conimbriga and the sheer scale of Fatima."

It was very informative. We felt a bit like tourists and couldn't hear the guide much of the time through the single earpiece. The ambient noise was being picked up by her microphone and broadcast along with her voice. We bought a headphone blue tooth converter that we can plug into the whisper devices and then use our air pods for next time (and also the flights).

Our guide, Fatima, exuded the spirit of Portugal! She was knowledgeable and fun loving. Too much time was spent at churches and monasteries, especially standingi in long lines in 90 degree heat. Meeting Portuguese people going about their daily lives was wonderful. I loved that our bus driver shared some meals with us. With the current itinerary, I would not recommend this tour. Perhaps schedule a day or two in a small coastal town. More people to people time.

Great tour for discovering most of Portugal! Our tour guide, Maria, was fabulous--so knowledgeable, experienced, patient, and good humored. The itinerary was well structured, the logistics very well organized, and I liked the mix of activities we did. The tour was well-designed and very interesting. Portugal is a beautiful country with a complex and rich history of many groups that overtook its rule and strong influence from the Catholic Church. The Portuguese are understandably proud of their history exploring the seas and discovering India as well as Brazil. The sights selected and the guide's instructive talks gave excellent background on this aspect of the country. It was also fascinating and instructive to visit the farm.

It was a very good tour that was so well managed by our guide, Todd. He gave us handouts of information about the country and culture that was very interesting and where really good authentic restaurants were in each place we stayed. However, at least 7-8 people got sick, 4 with COVID. A family of 4 did not fully participate in the tour and relate to others. Those were unfortunate things. Todd did handle the sickness well, having them wear masks and eating at a separate table from others.

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Lisbon (LIS) and out of Porto (OPO) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Portugal.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Portugal guidebook.
