Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Italy
We'll gather at our Rome hotel at 4 p.m. for a "Welcome to Italy" group meeting. Afterward, we'll take an evening stroll through the meandering streets of "village" Rome on our way to tonight's trattoria, where we'll get acquainted over dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.
Day 2: Layers of Rome
This morning we'll tour the world's first museums, the Capitoline. Here we'll learn about Rome's golden age through its most treasured sculptures, including the sublime Dying Gaul, the imposing Marcus Aurelius on horseback, and the emblematic She-Wolf suckling Rome's tiny founding brothers, Romulus and Remus. Then we'll take an eye-opening walk along the east bank of the Tiber, where we'll learn about the rich, yet often-overlooked, history of Rome's Jewish Ghetto. The rest of the day is yours to wander through the Roman Colosseum and Forum, enjoy the panoramic city view from atop the nearby Victor Emmanuel Monument, or make a modern-day pilgrimage to St. Peter's Basilica and Vatican City.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.
Day 3: Tivoli and the Gargano Peninsula
We'll leave Rome early, stopping in the nearby hills to learn about the Roman emperor Hadrian at the ruins of his monumental villa at Tivoli. An enthusiastic traveler and builder, Hadrian's lasting legacy includes his great wall across Britain, the domed Pantheon, and his stylish beard. Then we'll drive up and over the Apennine spine of Italy and on to the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Our destination this evening is the tip of the rugged Gargano Peninsula, one of the most beautiful areas of southern Italy — and still unknown to American travelers. We'll share dinner tonight near our seaside hotel.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Vieste.
Day 4: Vieste and the Adriatic Coast
Vieste's beaches are packed with Italians in mid-summer. But when we arrive, we'll find a peaceful contrast to the hustle and bustle of Rome. We'll take a boat cruise along the craggy Gargano Coast, marveling at the picture-perfect coves, hidden grottos, and unusual rock formations that make this coastline unforgettable. We'll return to Vieste with plenty of time to wander through the town or simply luxuriate on the beach.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 1½ hours. No bus. Sleep in Vieste.
Day 5: Alberobello and Matera
Today we'll head south, continuing through Puglia and into the Basilicata region, with a stop for a wine tasting and lunch, where we'll learn about and sample some local vintages, meats, and cheeses. In Alberobello, we'll explore cone-shaped, stone trulli houses that are still lived in today. Then we'll drive on to the town of Matera, known for its unique Sassi neighborhoods made up of ancient cave dwellings.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Matera.
Day 6: The Wonders of Matera
With the help of a locally grown expert, we'll learn the stories of old and new Matera. We'll begin our day discovering the wonders of the 9,000-year-old Sassi. We'll go inside a Sasso home to gain an appreciation for the cave-dwelling conditions endured by the residents until they were relocated 60 years ago. We'll continue our education with a visit to a rock-hewn church and a look at the new town. You'll have the rest of your day free to wander through the different layers of Matera. This evening, watch — or better yet join — the ritual passeggiata of strolling locals in this authentic, untouristed part of Italy.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Matera.
Day 7: Paestum and the Amalfi Coast
Early this morning we'll drive into the Campania region and tour an organic water buffalo farm that produces the prized local specialty, mozzarella di bufala. We'll go into the barns and learn how this tasty delicacy is made and enjoy a gourmet lunch together featuring (you guessed it) fresh buffalo mozzarella. After lunch, we'll continue on to Paestum to marvel at this site's awe-inspiring lineup of three ancient Greek temples — the best-preserved collection in Europe. Then we'll follow the cliff-clinging seaside road to Salerno, where we'll take a scenic boat ride to our final destination: the Amalfi Coast.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep on the Amalfi Coast.
Day 8: Free Day on the Amalfi Coast
The day is all yours to enjoy the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. Take a local bus along the twisting roads and wild beauty of the Amalfi highway, hopping off to explore cliffside villages, or take advantage of the sea and take a public boat to the neighboring towns. Check out the sweeping views from Ravello, the candy-striped church in Amalfi town, and the narrow streets and posh shops of Positano, or let gravity pull you down to a beach to relax upon. Tonight will be a great night to find a trattoria with a glorious sunset view.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep on the Amalfi Coast.
Day 9: Pompeii and Sorrento
This morning we'll make a short drive to serene Sorrento, stopping for a thoughtful visit to unlucky Pompeii, where, with an ace local guide, we'll get a look at everyday life frozen in time two millennia ago. After free time to explore more of Pompeii on your own and enjoy lunch, we'll continue on to Sorrento, our cliff-hugging home set amongst the lemon groves. This afternoon, we'll take an orientation walk through town on our way to watch the creation of an Italian culinary masterpiece — gelato. The rest of your evening is free to explore more of this spectacular setting.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Sorrento.
Day 10: Serene Sorrento and Capri
Today is all yours. Take a boat ride to Capri, where you can then board a much smaller boat to the deservedly famous Blue Grotto. Or spend all or part of the day enjoying Capri's remarkable views, winding lanes, fancy summer homes, and lovely gardens. Or stay in Sorrento and wander through the shop-lined back streets, stopping to savor il dolce far niente — the sweetness of doing nothing. This evening we'll meet for a home-hosted dinner with a local Sorrento family.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Sorrento.
Day 11: Classy, Gritty Naples
After a morning drive, we'll start the day with a Vespa-dodging, laundry-flapping walking tour through the hubbub of Neapolitan life. Afterward, we'll introduce you to a legendary slice of Naples' history: the classic Pizza Napoletana, invented by a Neapolitan pizzaiolo in the late 19th century. Then we'll regroup at our hotel and set you free for the evening to explore more of Naples on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Naples.
Day 12: Naples' Art Treasures
We'll begin our morning with a visit to the inspiring Cappella Sansevero, home to amazingly lifelike sculptures that have to be seen to be believed. We'll continue touring the greatest treasures of Pompeii, brought to Naples' National Archeological Museum for safekeeping. We'll also be dazzled by the Farnese collection, including the largest single sculpture ever recovered from antiquity: the Farnese Bull. This larger-than-life riot of animal, human, and divine struggle was adored and painstakingly restored by Michelangelo. Then, armed with the confidence and Neapolitan street smarts you've learned from your guide, your afternoon is free for making your own discoveries. Tonight, we'll get together for a special dinner to share travel memories and toast new friends. Salute!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Naples.
Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Naples' airport by taxi, easily arranged through our hotel. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

This was our second Rick Steves tour and we enjoyed it as much as the first. Our tour guide, Alfredo, was such a great leader and our stops were all so unique and memorable. There was enough free time to enjoy things separately from the organized tour, and the things we learned and places we stopped were all worthwhile. We are already in the early stages of planning another tour!

A Neopolitan native, who speaks 4 languages, he gave great advice re: what to visit and when. Alfredo is a very knowledgeable and personable guide who made the trip a pleasure to be on. We traveled with a wonderful bunch of people who shared the same reasons for wanting to travel on an RS tour. We saw and learned so much about the history of the part of Italy we traveled in. Much more than we could get in any guidebook.

Overall I enjoyed what I experienced on the 1st half of the tour the mist. I loved the guide in the wonder museum in Rome. Also Alberobello was interesting and we had a lovely afternoon there. The weather was great, not too warm but very pleasant. I also enjoyed Giovanezza because the hotel was so nice and the location beautiful. By the time We got to Matera, which was so cool, I was very sick with Covid. Lits of people on the bus were coughing and were saying it was just a cold.; it was Covid.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"Ieven though I was ill, thinking I had a cold, I went to Cimbrone Villa in Sorrento. That was spectacular. I was sick during Pimpeii and the Greek ruins at Paestum, so I missed that. I enjoyed as much as I could, the meal in Naples at rhe family home, but I wouldn’t have gone if I’d known I had Covid. By then I believe others had it and exposed the family. "

Now that you have seen Northern Italy, Southern Italy is a charming sequel. Several World Heritage Sites on this tour. Vieste on the Adriatic Coast is wonderful. The boat cruise is unforgettable. The stone trulli houses in Alberobello are cute. Matera is fascinating, but I suggest you do stair training before you go. The buffalo mozzarella farm is interesting, but feels too commercial for a Rick Steves tour. Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, CAPRI, are also wonderful. Best tour guide was at Pompeii.

"My spouses "wow" moment was Vieste: The view of sunrise on the Adriatic Sea from the hotel, eating a candlelight seafood dinner on the water's edge, and exploring the coves and grottos by boat. "I loved Matera. I had read about it before, but being there was amazing. The guided tour led by a local guide provided a deeper understanding of the historical reality of life there before people were forcibly resettled. Plus we had a great interaction with a local waitress over Tufino, a cat who lived near the wine bar and had been stuck on a roof for 5 days before being rescued by the fire department just hours."

It was great. We loved every tour and almost every place we visited, especially the Capitoline Museum, Matera, and Pompei. (We enjoyed the wine tasting in Alberobello, but the town itself didn't do much for us.) The overall guide, Andrea, was great, too. We like how the tour gives us time on our own, and we enjoyed meeting and talking to the others on the tour. It was just a terrific experience.

Fantastic tour! Each location was so unique & wonderful to experience, & the additional stops along the way were terrific. Staying in Maiori on the Amalfie Coast was awesome - ferry trip to Amalfie town was easy but way too busy & commercial - turned right around & returned to Minori & walked the Lemon Trail back to Maiori which was much more quaint & charming. Capri was a great day trip, & even loved Naples with its gritty charm & great vibe. Nina was a great guide & we loved this tour.

Absolutely outstanding - everything we expected and then some. This was our 10th Rick Steves Tour and there's a reason we choose these tours. Nina, our guide, is simply top notch - knowledgeable, caring, fun to be with, professional, understanding of the differing interests and needs of the group members - well, I could go on and on about how great she is. The group members were as expected - adventurous, friendly, eager to learn, open to new and different experiences, and fun to be with.

Our tour guide, Nina, was fantastic. She was super knowledgeable of the history and geography of the areas we toured. All of the local guides were great, with a special shout out to Francesca in Rome. She had such a connection to the places we went that it was an emotional experience. I really enjoyed the smaller towns we stayed in, they were more laid back and a pleasure to wander around and get a feel for what life is like in their town. The bus rides were sometimes long, but necessary.

Sights never seen before, cities we never thought about visiting, dishes prepared in a whole different light and new friends made. These were only a small part of the tour experience. This was Rick Steve's 2.0 for us. Last year at this time we were in France on the Wine Tour, so we had expectations of what Southern Italy might bring, and it didn't miss the mark. A great tour guide, sights never before seen and, pizza totally unlike home. It all added up to 13 truly great days and memories.

"It's hard to count the amount of wow's and whoa's on this trip. As a professional designer I can find, a multitude of moments around every street corner or in every museum we visited. I was stunned by the homes built into the hillsides of Matera, the history of a city 7,000 year old, the view from the top of the hillside overlooking Capri, or the understanding the history of Pompeii. To my wife, her "wow" came when we viewed the "Veiled Christ" in Naples. We both stood there awestruck. "

We thoroughly enjoyed the Best of South Italy tour with Alfredo. This was our second Rick Steves' tour, the first being the Best of Italy tour in 2022. The South Italy tour had more of an archaeological emphasis (Tivoli, Matera, Paestum, Pompeii) than the previous one, which we appreciated. The tour group got along well and Alfredo was a great tour guide. It was a special treat to have a Neapolitan show us his city, which I believe allowed us to gain a deeper appreciation of Naples.

"Our favorite wow moment was our visit to Matera. We had never heard of the Sassi or Matera, and it was an amazing location from a visual and educational perspective. It was fascinating to learn about the history of this town, including how it gained notoriety through Carlo Levi's book. Getting to stay in a cave hotel was such a unique experience that really added to the wow factor, too. Matera is a terrific example of Rick's back door, authentic Italian experiences that most tourists don't get. "

What a fantastic tour guide, Beatrice was wonderful and I can't say enough good things about our group. What a wonderful group to travel with. In fact, it was more spectacular than I imagined, and the everyday artifacts from Pompeii located at the Archaeological Museum in Naples were impressive, as were the huge statues from the Caracalla Baths. I compare my experience to another recent tour, which I enjoyed (slightly) more. My main reasons: The group felt a little closer on the first tour, the second tour felt a little less organized as regards communications from our leader, and the places visited were notably more crowded. The latter is simply because the places are popular, and I understand that RS avoids these places in summer. If not for the recent comparison, I would rate overall as a 5. Maybe more "wow" moments on the 2nd tour.

Vanessa was a fabulous guide - energetic, upbeat, knowledgeable, funny, kind. The locations were beautiful, the other tour members friendly, the hotels fine, the food delicious. I was so glad to have a chance to see a bit of Puglia and to finally get to Pompeii. I liked staying in Maiori on the Amalfi Coast as it was less frenetic than some of the other towns there. I appreciated our two free days on the Amalfi Coast and in Sorrento. I also enjoyed the big cities of Rome and Naples.

Great guide, Alfio, and fun fellow travelers ( (thank all of you for your help and concern). I enjoyed every aspect of the trip.. towns, boat rides, back street exploring,, culture , museums and food . Our guide Alfio was Informative, caring and a great person all around. The steps/ stairs were a challenge for me but I was happy to be a part of this wonderful trip!

Overall, we enjoyed the tour experience very much. I would suggest a few changes in the itinerary to allow more time at some of the sites and less time at others.

"Matera was a definite wow moment for me. Though I thoroughly enjoyed Hadrian's Villa and the temples at Paestum. "

The tour guide and the additional local guides were fabulous (with one exception). The balance of the structured time and free time was great. This was my first RS trip and I was very pleased and would do another one. We had a great group that got along well. The couple of things that I wish were a bit better were the quality of items sold on RS website. Quite frankly, they are poor quality and mostly siding work.

Tour guide Alfredo did an awesome job of keeping up our energy, getting us engaged & knowing when we needed a different pace. Rooms & amenities exceeded my expectations after your materials told us what not up expect! Several on our tour were repeat RS travelers. Loved seeing the RS Fraternity & felt welcomed in by all. Hoping to tour again with RS!

Being able to explore South Italy in a stress free way was an amazing experience. It is exciting to travel in another country, but it can be difficult. Our guide, Alfredo, who was native to the area, made the trip. He assisted us with a command over the few words we needed to communicate with the locals. He helped us make the most of our free time. He told us the history we needed to know to appreciate where we were going. There was enough built in free time to explore on your own.

"Franchesca, our guide in Rome, gave me tools to feel confident in exploring museums. She was the perfect person to have as our first official local guide. She addressed frustrations you can have when visiting museums and ways to deal with this. Our Pompeii guide and our first guide in Napoli also had the ability to relate information, almost in a story telling style, so that you were not just being rained upon with facts. Wine tasting in Alberobello, dinner at Theresa's, Buffalo farm "

This is my first tour of any kind and so there is no comparison to make, but all in all, it was educational, and very well run. I would not do it again, though as 26 people is too large a group for me, and the sheer number of amazing places we went and works of art we saw within such a short span of 13 days, felt like too much content to absorb without enough time to really take in and contemplate what we were seeing. We did have amazing passionate guides..I just needed a more relaxed pace.

"There were many "wow" moments, but clearly the marble sculptures and amazing paintings seen in the Musei Capitolini in Rome were beyond amazing. The marble sculpture by Giuseppe Sammartino of the "Veiled Christ" in the Sansevero Chapel actually has to be seen to be believed. The marble actually seems to be alive with a beautiful energy."

This tour was a great adventure into a part of Italy we had never visited. Other than our stops in Rome and Naples the areas we visited were much less crowded. Our group and guide were among the best group of people you could ask to travel with. The historical parts of the tour were well tempered with current events including the lifestyle of the locals and the fine cuisine they enjoy. We got plenty of exercise and also had ample time to recover.

As a single traveler I enjoy the loaded itinerary of sights and activities balanced by free time to further explore on your own format. The peeps from all around the country were of the same mindset and got along well with each other. While we ended up visiting the Amalfi Coast and popular cites like Sorrento and Napoli, I rather enjoyed the Adriatic side of the 'boot' and less familiar destinations like Vieste and Matera. Hotels were centrally located, and group meals were pretty decent.

"Sleeping in a cave hotel in Matera and the pizza in Napoli were up there for me. The handling of logistics on those tiny roads on the Amalfi Coast by the bus drivers was admirable too. Well planned and well executed RS tour; number six for me."

This was my 3rd. Rick Steves tour. I loved all of them but have several suggestions. I have 4 suggestions. 1) Do a better job of use of time; at Hadrian's Villa, we were only given one and a half hours to do the tour. 2) Offer a choice of tours; i.e. museums in Rome and Pompee. 3) Speaks on tours ( museum in Rome and Pompee) Both were boring and rambled on and on. 4) Hearing devices, good idea but when you only hear out of one ear, in noisy areas, the other ear can hear the noise, which makes?

"Paestum on the Amalfi Coast to view the Greek and Italian temples. I loved this part primary because I could wonder and view these great temples alone and spend time taking photos at my leisure."
When To Go & Weather
Any time between April and October is a good time to visit southern Italy. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with the most pleasant weather.

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Rome (FCO) and out of Naples (NAP) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Italy. Please note: The train from Naples to Rome takes anywhere from 70 minutes to two hours, so avoid early-morning flights out of Rome.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Italy guidebook.
