Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Greece
We'll gather at our hotel at 6 p.m. for a "Welcome to Athens" group meeting. Then we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk together and get acquainted with one another over dinner.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Athens.
Day 2: Athens' Acropolis
This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old golden-age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Athens.
Day 3: Delphi
This morning we'll leave the city behind and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus, we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll enjoy dinner together.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Delphi.
Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains
Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride up to the historic town of Kalavryta, past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. Just beyond, at a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we'll enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Train: 1 hour. Sleep in or near Lagkadia.
Day 5: Ancient Olympia
This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by time for lunch on your own. This afternoon, we’ll stop at an olive mill and enjoy an olive oil tasting, then continue our drive along the sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep on the Mani Peninsula.
Day 6: Seaside Discoveries
The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills, or just relax on the beach and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered.
Walking light to strenuous: your choice. No bus. Sleep on the Mani Peninsula.
Day 7: Mani Villages
We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, they'd be here. We'll enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia.
Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia
This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, you'll have free time to wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You'll be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This evening we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia.
Day 9: Byzantine Mystras
Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll visit a family-run winery to learn about the re-emergence of ancient traditions in Greek wines and sample their successes. Then we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio, where after an orientation, you'll be free for dinner on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Nafplio.
Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio
After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. Tonight we'll regroup for dinner and a traditional music performance.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Nafplio.
Day 11: Ancient Epidavros
This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, Epidavros' star attraction today is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep on Hydra.
Day 12: Island of Hydra
Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We'll cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour.
Walking light to strenuous: your choice. No bus. Sleep on Hydra.
Day 13: Athens' National Archaeological Museum
This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us to Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa!
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Boat: 2 hours. Sleep in Athens.
Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab to the airport or to nearby Piraeus, where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

Ioanna was so very kind, knowledgeable, funny – great leader! Our driver George was beyond amazing! Group dynamics – we laughed a lot! Food: I enjoyed the fresh salads, vegetables, grilled fish and yogurt. Mistakenly, I thought there would be a lot of fresh fruit. Being pre-diabetic, I was unhappily surprised at all the fried food, starches and sugar – which I have to avoid for my health. Overall, I appreciate that we had in a lot of different experiences

"Ioanna - the leader can make or break the tour. All but one of our RS guides have been wonderful – but Ioanna is a step above wonderful Wow moments of the tour: the beauty of the sea, the theater, seeing the ancient music that was used in the Paris summer Olympics 2024! "

Fourteen days in the heart of Greece may well be the best ever travel experience I have enjoyed in Europe, or for that matter, anywhere. Although being a rather independent person, I didn't feel "boxed in" or constrained by travelling with others in a managed tour. Instead, i found every moment to be fun and enjoyable, whether riding comfortably on George's tour bus or exploring the outer perimeters of a mountain village with two new found friends. Our amazing guide, Ioanna - a STAR!!

"It is hard to pick a "wow" moment. Just being in Athen's and the vicinity of the Acropolis, seeing the illuminated Parthenon from the Hotel Hera's beautiful rooftop lounge/bar was stunningly exciting. But so was visiting Delphi and standing in its amphitheater with awe. Or traveling by train tram up a steep, deeply beautiful gorge and ending later in an outdoor feast of fresh, pan fried trout! So many wow moments, all accompanied by good cheer, humor, and ongoing laughter."

"It was actually a quiet lunch in Kardamyli. Above the hills of the city our guide pointed out on a morning hike. A little restaurant, Palaia Kardamyli well above the town with a beautiful view of the ocean. It was slightly busy with international travelers. We had an orange/feta/caper salad and lamb (and wine). Such a wonderful taste of Greece..local business, wonderful Greek food and excellent company with my tour buddy."

The tour guide, Ioanna, was outstanding! Her knowledge, humor, and kindness to all made her the perfect guide. The itinerary and activities were very good and covered a broad range. The bus was comfortable and George a master driver. Unfortunately the accommodations were sub-par and affected the enjoyment of the trip. Other group members said they were the worst accommodations of their five Rick Steves tours. We saw nicer places so the tour seemed cheap here.

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the tour. Greece is a fascinating country with ancient ruins and beautiful mountains. Touring Greece by land was breathtaking. The varied places we traveled by bus helped me understand and appreciate Greece's diversity. It was magnificent to see the ancient ruins at each of our stops. At every place we visited, the guides imparted a wealth of knowledge. I also enjoyed the leadership of our guide, Danae, and the camaraderie of our group.

"My wow moment was going to the rock in Monemvasia. Just seeing the massive rock from our hotel was impressive. Once on the rock, the views of the Aegean Sea were spectacular. The sea was such a beautiful blue-green color. Walking through the streets and exploring the narrow alleyways were intriguing and challenging. It was hard to imagine how anything could be carved into this rock. The group pictures taken from the rock are ones I will always cherish."

Marvelous experience: wonderful guide (Danae), fast pact interspersed with time to ourselves, the food is fabulous, I gained many new insights into how the gods and history are part of the Greek "DNA", the Greek way of life now and in the past, the Orthodox church, the monuments, the sea and the accommodations were almost all top notch.

"Monemvasia: the hot and grueling hike to the top the "Rock" with the incredible 360 degree view. Hiking down the rocky trail and heading to the platform on the sea tuck into the side of the mountain. Falling into the gorgeous and refreshing water and paddling around. A couple of high school girls had snuck away from their field trip and they joyously jumped in and giggled "we're not supposed to go to the sea!" Visiting with a couple of other Greeks also resting and swimming. A gem of a memory."

This experience greatly increased my understanding and appreciation for both modern day and ancient Greece. The Acropolis complex, including the museum, help one to imagine life in ancient Greece, at least for the elite and near elite. Our guide was very well informed , assured that we were all informed, and helped with the usual hiccups. The local expert guides at each location were excellent at each of the significant sites.

"My WOW place was Delphi, our first stop outside Athens. The museum was excellent and the excavated ruins going up the mountain including a parthenon, an ampitheater, as well as the "stadium" set in the top of the mountain from at least 25 centuries ago, with more to be fully excavated. Recognizing that this undoubtedly represents the work of uncounted slaves in addition to those who conceived and oversaw the development the entire complex, it is ]nevertheless.astoundingly impresive."

Fantastic. Danae was the most wonderful guide, knowledgeable and on top of everything. She managed everything beautifully and her store of knowledge, from history to modern customs and their context in comparison to American life, to her ability to relay history in a wonderful story telling manner, to her problem-solving skills - all top notch. Every stop and accommodation was a welcome wow moment.

"I can't pick - too many! But I will say, when I reflect on the trip, it's terrain and sea that seem star players. I expected Greece to be beautiful and historic, but when there it's that times 10. The mountains and sea, so everpresent, are such a stage for the towns, ruins, restorations, history, modern life, and origins all around. It sets your imagination free to reflect on the spans of history, the centuries of culture, development, and the joy of being there, where it happened. "

I truly enjoyed the mix of history, geography, food, and the wonderful chaos of Greece. The tour was very well balanced between "tour" time (museums, historical sites, and organized outings) and "vacation" time (wandering, beach time, and just relaxing). Dafni, our delightful guide, provided insights throughout the trip, and our local guides built on her information to make the ancient sites of Greece come alive. I could not have experienced such a good mix on my own. This is why we go on tours!

"I had a "wow" DAY in Monemvasia! We climbed to the top of the rock and explored medieval ruins, took in breathtaking views of Laconia and the sea, relaxed in a blues bar in the lower town, then walked down for a refreshing swim in the warm, clear waters of the Aegean. Later we made friends with a restaurant owner who gave us a free IPA, then had a Greek cooking class. Life doesn't get much better! I was also gobsmacked by the Parthenon view from the hotel rooftop in Athens! Who wouldn't be!"

This was our sixth RS tour and it was again remarkable. As usual the food, hotels and beautiful historic sites were outstanding. The local guides for each location were exceptional and helpful in understanding the importance of each location. Our fantastic guide was Dafni - she was fun, entertaining but kept us on track so every moment was used to the fullest. A very well planned trip; the pace was active. Time was available to pursue your own interests and explore on your own. Or relax.

"There are always too many "wow" moments. The Parthenon is my choice. Upon seeing the Acropolis and the Parthenon from our roof top bar the first night, this was a wow! This ancient enduring symbol of Greece and democracy was light up at night. It was so dramatic. Certainly a high point of our visit. Then to walk around it and seeing the majesty and massive size of this structure was overwhelming. Amazing that it was constructed 450 BC. We sadly said goodbye to it our final night at the roof."

It is clear that it is the tour guide/leader that makes the tour. Ours was truly outstanding. She clearly has a deep love of her country and it's history. We had a wonderful overall tour experience. Very well organized with a good balance between group and free time. Some morning starts were a bit early with time for breakfast very compressed (one day with only 20 minutes for breakfast) but we understand it was with the best intention of missing large crowd sizes (which worked for the most part) as well as travel itineraries that had to be met.

My partner Michael and I thought our guide Apostolos was stupendous. He communicates well with Americans and gave us a realistic view of Greece, coached our use of the Greek language, and encouraged group camaraderie. We spent an extra week climbing Philopappos Hill for sunset views of the Acropolis and took the funicular to the top of Lycabettus Hill. My eyes were overwhelmed by the intense sun and beautiful blues experienced during our 3 weeks of 80 degree sun.

I won't forget the adventure of climbing to the upper town of Monemvasia, climbing Mars Hill and climbing down Mystras. What an amazing surprise! Greece! It's so much more than white buildings with blue trim, with brilliant blue seas. This tour included the large vibrant city of Athens, the mountains of Delphi, the amazing varied landscapes, the ancient sites, the amazing local guides (Mama Faye - what a storyteller, she is in my memory forever), the food, and our stellar guide Maria - her love of Greece and knowledge inspired us all. Our tour group was great; good conversations, sharing stories and friendship.

"Two things wowed me; walking the steps up to the Acropolis and seeing the Parthenon in person. After art history textbooks and lecture slide presentations - I was there, I was experiencing this stunning architectural perfection and beauty. It takes away your breath. The other WOW was Hydra - no cars, no motorcycles. Serene moments of quiet; sounds of donkey hooves on cobblestone, a rooster crowing, people talking, food being prepared - you really hear all these sound & then, the beautiful sea."

My wife and I started early in the morning, to get ahead of both the crowds and the sun, and climbed all the way to the top. At the summit, the beautiful ruins and views of the greater Gefyra coastline crowned it all nicely."

There were two particularly striking views up there: from the back of the Agia Sofia, the water so clear has thousands of shades of blue; the other from the very top, seeing the town below and feeling so big and so small at the same time. Greece was unlike any European country we've visited. The history and intimacy with ruins thousands of years old was almost overwhelming, definitely humbling. The country itself is beautiful and wild and exotic. Yet very comfortable and welcoming. Our guide Anastacia was wonderful, we learned so much from her. The hotels were all great (the one in Nafplio was the most delightfully unique), the food was delicious everywhere, and our total group meshed beautifully with one another. Scenery, sites, and museums were amazing.

I really enjoyed the tour of Greece but some of the older friends on our tour struggled physically with all of the high steps and the climbing. The rocks are shiny and very slippery. You really need to have a pair of shoes with excellent tread and grip so you don’t slip. Several people didn’t have the right shoes and it was difficult for them. I think it needs to be spelled out more about the steps and rocks being so slippery. Many of our tour friends did not feel safe on them.

This was my sister and my third RS tour together, our first two being in Italy. Since I’m 69 and 16 years older, I wanted to do another high energy tour while I could. This one was perfect. High energy, great sights, perfect narrations and enough down time to reenergize us for the nest day! Our guide, Ioanna is a gem! She was so pleasant, informative, personable and above all, compassionate! We each felt like the tour was uniquely designed for us as she guided us thru her beautiful country!

"My personal “Wow!” moment was when my sister and I visited the island of Monemvasia. After our guided tour of the lower and then upper “towns” those who wanted to could hike to the top of the island. At the age of 69, with my sister being 16 years younger, I gave it a go. These were not paved paths, but many times a navigation of rocky, and natural gravel and dirt paths. The view from the top was amazing. Especially when we got back to our hotel with a beautiful view back to my accomplishment!"

Our guide Lorenza was fantastic. She is very experienced in taking tours through Greece and is very knowledgeable of the history, features, culture, people, etc. When I left a coat behind at a hotel she jumped to help, called the hotel, and arranged shipment to our next hotel. Turn Key. Especially key since I don't speak Greek!!!!!!!

"Learning from Lorenza how the Athenians stopped the Persians in a battle and basically saved what we know now as western, liberal, democratic culture."

The tour was awesome - we were able to see ancient sites that we had learned about years ago. Our guide was excellent, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing her insights. Local guides were also great. Our bus driver was superb, negotiating hairpin curves on very narrow roads.

"Our first glimpse of the Acropolis was at night from our hotel rooftop. It was amazing. Our visit to Delphi was very special - the setting of the Theatre and the Temple of Apollo with the backdrop of rugged mountains was unforgettable."

we were glad we were able to see many of the sites we've heard about all our lives. Our expectations of our time by the sea was no doubt influenced by all the marketing for Santorini. By contrast, the rocky drab terrain was a bit disappointing

The tour gave me the incredible opportunity to view, ponder and thoroughly appreciate several of the world's most important historical sites, which was both exhilarating, and at times, very humbling.

"My most favourite "wow" moment of the tour was the crystal clear night time view of the illuminated Parthenon, from the 7th floor of our Athens hotel. "

The tour was well organized and led, the ancient sites were fascinating, and the scenery was stunningly beautiful. The local guides, particularly the ones at Olympia and Delphi, brought the ruins and museum exhibits to life. The food was good (the farewell dinner in Athens may have been the best meal we have ever had), our travel mates were fun and inclusive, and the weather (mostly) ideal for traveling. A wonderful trip!

"I was amazed at the engineering and construction that were involved in the domed tomb at Mycenae and the theater at Epidavros. The ancient people that built those structures were skilled designers and builders, and their creations are astounding. "

The tour was wonderful, but my wife had the bad luck to get sick and missed a lot of the activities. I participated as much as I could while taking care of her and was very impressed with the itinerary, the scenery, and the sites. Hopefully, we can come back to Greece sometime.

My husband and I loved the trip. Our fellow tourists were delightful, and our guide was brilliant, humorous (and it's not easy to be humorous in other than one's native language), helpful, encouraging, and kind. We felt fortunate to have him as our guide.
