Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll meet at 5 p.m. at our hotel for a short "bienvenue à Paris" meeting. Then we'll take an orientation walk through our neighborhood, followed by time to get acquainted over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 2: Historic Paris and Sainte-Chapelle

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including a pair of Europe's most significant medieval Gothic churches — the legendary and resilient Notre-Dame Cathedral (exterior) and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle — along with a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter. This afternoon, you'll be free to explore more of Paris, including the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art — from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin and more — at the Orsay Museum.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 3: Neighborhood Paris and the Louvre

This morning we'll take a more intimate look at Paris and what gives the French their joie de vivre with a promenade through one of your guide's favorite Parisian neighborhoods. Then we are off to the Louvre Museum. With your smartphone in hand and the Rick Steves Audio Europe™ app, Rick's voice will guide you through timeless treasures including the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more. Your afternoon will be free to be inspired by Monet's incredible Water Lilies at the Orangerie, compelled to climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, or take a classy stroll along the Champs-Elysées.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 4: Medieval Guédelon and Bourges

Today we'll leave Paris and head for the Château de Guédelon — a medieval castle being built today in Burgundy using 13th-century materials and techniques. Local experts may give us a close-up look at masons cutting limestone, sheep being sheared, and blacksmiths at work. Then we'll drive past farms, forests, and vineyards to the overlooked town of Bourges. Once we arrive we'll wander along the cobbled lanes and medieval half-timbered houses on a walking tour with a local guide. Our tour will culminate with a visit of Bourges' Cathédrale St-Etienne, where we'll learn how to read some of France's most remarkable and original medieval stained glass before having dinner together this evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Bourges.

Day 5: The Loire and Chambord

Today we'll head for the biggest and brightest of the Loire Valley châteaux — Chambord — where 365 fireplaces warmed royal hunting parties for more than 500 years. We'll have ample time to visit this magnificent château, its expansive grounds, and find some lunch. A bit farther up the road, our own Loire Valley accommodations will be every bit as French, but a little more down-to-earth. Dinner together tonight.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in the Loire Valley.

Day 6: Chenonceau and Amboise

This morning we'll visit the elegant, river-straddling, 16th-century Château de Chenonceau. We'll learn more about royal life in France and have plenty of free time to roam its opulent interior and gardens. This afternoon you'll have time on your own in Amboise to find lunch and sightsee. You can choose to visit Leonardo da Vinci's home, Clos-Lucé, and marvel at the working models of the Renaissance Man's cleverest inventions; tour Amboise's cliff-hanging castle; or wander the pleasant pedestrian-friendly streets.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in the Loire Valley.

Day 7: Brittany and Mont St-Michel

We'll depart the Loire Valley this morning and make a beeline to Brittany. We'll stop for lunch and a walk through a quintessential Breton town, where we'll learn about the Bretons' Celtic origins. Later this afternoon, we'll take a short drive to the timeless, picture-perfect island of Mont St-Michel. We'll arrive as the tourist tide recedes, ensuring a less crowded experience here. We'll share dinner together and stay on the Mont itself.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep on Mont St-Michel.

Day 8: A Taste of Normandy

This morning we'll take a walking tour of Mont St-Michel's town and its towering abbey to learn about local legends, monastic life, and the far-reaching influences exerted by abbeys in French history. Then we'll drive into the heart of Normandy, where we'll stop by a local ciderie and sample some Norman specialties before settling into our accommodations for the evening.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Normandy.

Day 9: Normandy's D-Day Beaches

We'll spend the day with a local expert who will give us a powerful tour of the Normandy beaches where, in June of 1944, the Allied D-Day landings took place by sea and air. We'll visit Pointe du Hoc, where Army Rangers scaled the cliffs in pre-dawn darkness, and the American Cemetery, where 10,000 stark white markers memorialize the Americans who gave their lives on the beaches below. We'll also visit the strategic town of Sainte-Mère Eglise, the airborne drop site made famous by The Longest Day and Band of Brothers. We'll return to our Normandy home base in time for dinner on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Normandy.

Day 10: Monet's Gardens at Giverny

We'll depart early this morning to visit Monet's beautifully preserved, masterpiece-inspiring gardens in the town of Giverny. In addition to the serene ponds made famous by Monet's paintings, we'll also see his house, studio, and Japanese garden. After free time for lunch, we'll make our way back to Paris and a farewell feast together tonight, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Santé!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Paris.

Day 11: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

I enjoyed the scope of the tour. I had been to Paris before, so that was a little repetitive, but the rest of the trip brought me in contact with places I had only read about.

It was well organized from start to finish. Our group came together well and our guide, Rebecca Barry, put us at ease immediately with her sense of humor, knowledge, and comfort with the French culture and language.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many! We were fascinated with Gudelon. The whole discovery process of how builders built these chateaux and castles in the 1300’s…amazing experience. Right up there though is the story of the church and Normandy beaches with Dale Booth. He is an incredible story teller."

This tour was fantastic, highly strenuous, packed with so many sites, surprises, and an AMAZING TOUR GUIDE! We could not have had a better trip. The food, the visited sites, just everything on this tour was just incredible. Every day was new and exciting. Visiting Normandy and Mon St Michele were highlights. But all the sites were gorgeous and beautiful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite WOW moment was Normandy. Our local guide was incredible. I was just overwhelmed to tears knowing all those young soldiers, over 9,000, died within 3days. Just writing about Normandy causes me to tear up again. "

Guillaume was an amazing guide! Knowledgeable in all areas, humorous with all of us and a master at herding cats!! Our fellow travelers were the absolute best buddies! We were 28 strong and no one annoyed us at all. The tour was absolutely perfectly organised. Escaping the large touristy hours was a real gift as was the incredible variety of sights we visited. This was our first Rick Steves tours and we were blown away by every aspect of our journey. Accommodations, meals, free time and tours!!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"St Michele was our "Wow" moment. Arriving at 5 when the tourists left and walking the empty streets in the morning while walking up to the chapel to listen to the nuns chanting. Enjoying wine tasting at the renovated chateau was a perfect excursion after being in the Paris energy level. Seeing the inside of Notre Dame was a bonus for all of us!! Seeing the beaches and hearing detailed history of Normandy was sobering but very much appreciated, especially right before Memorial Day...and more"

This was our first guided RS tour. We had taken a My Way Tour previously and used Rick's books for self guided adventures. The guided tour of Paris and the Heart of France was perfect for us! We were a bit intimidated by the language on the outset and really appreciated the special treatment for our group wherever we went. RS Tours have great respect.

"Hard to pick just one: Visiting well-known sights of Notre Dame, the Louvre, Opera House and others, but also lesser-known smaller museums and churches. Paris at night, the Eiffel Tower lit up and sparkling as we passed by on our boat ride along the Seine. Giverny and Monet's home and gardens. The tour was a fabulous introduction to French culture, history, art, architecture, and cuisine. This was our first extended time in France. There were absolutely unique and memorable stops on th tour (Guidelon medieval castle construction), Normandy WW2 beaches, and staying overnight on Mont St. Michele. And Paris -- I miss the late rising and late dining and non-hurried cafe culture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When we walked through Jardin de Luxembourg in Paris on May 1 (Labor Day Holiday), the lawn area between the rows of trees on the south end of the gardens was full of families having picnics. Literally, there were hundreds of groups sitting on blankets covering the entire lawn area. As we approached, we could hear the buzz of quiet conversations, like bees in a field of flowers. It looked like a Monet painting. "

Our tour guide Veronique was the best, so very knowledgeable, friendly, fun loving and kept us on our schedule. This is our 3rd RS tour and probably our best. We got to see so much and learn so much. His personal connections thru family members and veterans brought even more.Best group of travelers that really all got along so very well. Great itinerary. highly recommend!

Our third RS tour. Once again we were not disappointed. The care, friendship and passion of our Guide Veronique was clearly above and beyond what we expected. Always cheerful, thoughtful and passionate about her love of educating and showing us the beauty of the French people, culture and country. Her timely use of each day was well thought out and executed. Our group “clicked” well together, especially with her humor and efforts. I would highly recommend the Heart of France” 🇫🇷 tour.

"Our D- Day we spent with Stewart was over the top. Professional, passionate to the 9th degree, he oozed to bring us back to WWII during our visits and discussions. We walked some of the same paths our troops while he shared vivid details and memories of those who lived to tell. On Utah beach standing next to a tank alone, I visualized my father sticking his head out of the tank as I watched him exit the tank. A very moving moment for me as he was active in the 612th Tank Destroyer Division."

Thank you Guilliaume for entertaining us about the history/culture of France. What soon became a merry troupe of travelers enjoyed centrally-located characteristic hotels, French cuisine, and a range of experiences - from tasting cheeses as we wandered through Les Halles market to being in Monet's garden. There were surprises such as a party on the banks of the Loire, and after having left my passport behind at a hotel, being able to contact Guilliaume for assistance was such a relief.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Learning about the bravery and complexity involved that ensured D-Day success. Mont Saint Michel made even more awe-inspiring after witnessing the amount of toil involved in erecting present-day Guedelon. Being immersed in the glow of Sainte-Chapelle windows, and walking within the newly- restored Notre Dame. A wine tasting led by the entertaining owner of a chateau. Gazing only inches away at the Bayeux tapestry, walking around the half-timbered medieval houses of Bourges, and Chenonceau."

I had an excellent time on my first Rick Steves' Europe tour. Arnaud was an excellent guide ready with tons of information and ready to answer any and all questions. Katleen was a great driver! The tour was everything I expected and more! I enjoyed the smaller towns and wish we had more time in those, so I guess that just means I'll have to come back at another time. This tour definitely gave me the opportunity to see and learn about places I would probably not have gone to on my own.

"Stuart Robertson guiding us through all the Normandy D-Day sites was excellent. He did a great job of telling us what happened through out D-Day at the various sites we visited. It ended with us being at the American Cemetery in time for playing of Taps. The gardens at Giverny were also excellent! The spring flowers were in bloom and it was just so beautiful."

This tour was my first time to France and it was delightful and enlightening to experience Paris at the beginning and end of the tour, as well as to go to beautiful and charming countryside towns and connect the history.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were two, the first was walking from our first hotel about 45 minutes to view the Eiffel Tower during the day and turning down a tree-lined street to suddenly witness the magnificance of the ET. The second was on our last evening back in Paris, after having a delicious farewell dinner as a group, eight of us walked 10 minutes in the rain to see the Eiffel Tower lit up and sparkling at the top of the hour, 10 pm. It didn't disappoint, even being soggy outside."

Great points of interest. Wonderful tour of the D day beaches. I woukd have liked to have Versailles on the itinerary. I would prefer having the first hotel near our activities. It was far from the Louvre, Notre Dame , St Chapelle and the Orsay. The Clichy area with its construction is not a great area right now.It would have been good to make sure to see the museums very late or very early to avoid crowds.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many spectacular sites to visit and see, but the biggest moment for me was when I was able to lay flowers at the grave of my uncle - who I had never met because he was killed in the battle for Brest in northern France, 1944. He is buried in the smaller Brittany American cemetery. I am the only family member who has been able to do this - thanks to our guide Julie (and our driver Jack) who arranged it all. It certainly made standing on the beaches of Normandy days later all the more poignant."

"We told our guide, Arnaud, that we wanted to visit an uncle's grave at the American cemetery in Normandy. He arranged an appointment in advance with a representative of the American Battle Monuments Commission who gave us written information about the veteran's unit, the place of his last battle, then escorted us through the cemetery for a special flag ceremony at the gravesite. We took home the presentation flags from France and the U.S. and the appreciation of the French people."

Very happy with overall tour, sights seen, size of group, hotels, guide, etc. Was disappointed with the second full day in Paris that included a walking tour thru a neighborhood and then the Louvre. The walking tour was nothing extraordinary and could have been done quicker or without - the schedule had made the insinuation that we would have had more time in the Louvre prior to 12:30, but we didn't get thru security before 1:15 and we had other plans in Paris at 3pm.

Well planned and executed tour of northern France highlights overall. We were reminded of our outstanding good fortune with weather everywhere. For the 1st half of April we had sun every day! Flowers had come out. The Parisians were picnicking on blankets and in the cafes. Chenonceau and Mont St Michelle were just glorious. Arnaud our leader was super fun. At 29 people it was twice the size of my next busiest tour but was well managed. I am definitely returning to France.

We have a truly star studded history, ranging from helping Robert the Bruce become King to a famous Civil War general. But I found out one of our clan was Eugenie de Montejo Empress to Napoleon III. One of your guides told me she has a wing at the Louvre, and I found it! Napoleon III apartments with gowns and a painting of her! The other was I attended dawn service by monks at Mont St Michelle. Paris and the Heart of France is a terrific tour combining big city Paris with smaller communities and iconic sites. Arriving four days early allowed us to visit recommended sites not included in the tour and adjust to the time difference. Claire McCarroll was an outstanding guide. She was informative, welcoming, kind and endearingly exuberant about sharing this corner of France with us. Everything was planned perfectly to take advantage of each site and allow for free time to explore or relax.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Staying on Mont St-Michel and attending the sunrise singing service. The Abbey tour, provided through Rick Steve's, was outstanding. Visiting the D-Day Beaches and memorials. The Rick Steve's provided guide was excellent and the timing of the visit to the American Cemetery impeccable to witness the flag ceremony, tapps and a totally unexpected missing man formation flyby. Although we went into this trip with some feelings of anxiety how we would be received, given very disrectful remarks made by our government, we were very moved by how warmly we were received everywhere we went. "There were many wow moments and smaller moments of "how great is this?!" or "how thoughtful and beautiful". To pick one as a favorite would be waking up before dawn on Mont Saint-Michel, climbing the stone steps in the dark and cold, and having a monk open the gates to enter the abbey church, and attending the morning prayer (Lauds). Another great tour from Rick Steves (this was our second). Saw so much we'd never see on other tours, with excellent guides, good food and good company. Even when a few of the people on the tour became ill, care was taken to keep the rest of us healthy, which was most appreciated. This was a great introduction to France. We had a good group of travelers and a very good guide. In addition to Paris, we experienced fascinating visits to Bourges, the Loire Valley, Mont Ste. I learned a lot. Itinerary was terrific -- clearly well thought out -- and we packed a lot in. There was also enough free time to let people explore on their own or rest. Travel by bus worked well, with lots of room, and I enjoyed talking with our driver. We all felt very well taken care.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Visiting the tiny hamlet where the two American medics had set up in a church to tend to all the injured, friend, foe, and local after D-Day. Very moving events on a day so different, especially moving when hearing that the lady who opens the church lived through those events as a ten-year old. I really appreciated a sense of comraderie with America palpable in Normandy that seemed to be way more than a commercial thing. "

I was highly impressed with the balance of tour + free time. The tour was excellent and our guide Rebecca was second to none. The balance of the tour was excellent and I enjoyed having some time to explore on our own as well as with the group.

"The Mont Saint Michel was magical. It was not only spectacular to explore the castle and grounds. The sunrise service was also mesmerizing with the singing/chanting from the monks and nuns. Our guide, Rebecca, was FABULOUS. Nothing that I say about the tour should reflect negatively on her. However, I think tour's design is flawed. Paris should not be mixed with the rest of the France stops. There's not enough time in Normandy (great museums we couldn't go to), Chambord is boring, there are too many one-night stops, the Louvre should be optional if Paris is kept. Compared to our Village Italy experience, this tour mixes two different things that don't go together well.

Amazing! Our tour guide, Rebecca, was absolutely a gem! Tour was so organized and fun! Great central hotels, amazing meals and never waited in lines. Bus was so convenient and efficient and stops along the route were perfectly timed and usually in wonderful towns or areas. So much thought has gone into this tour and we got so much out of it regarding history, architecture, sites and culture. I would highly recommend this tour.

Rebecca is an outstanding tour guide! The first full day of the tour in Paris was terrible because of the hurricane. Torrential rain all day. After that, everything we saw and did was amazing. My overall takeaway was that the tour itinerary was too busy. It seemed like we were always catching the bus and moving on. I wonder if not including Paris and focusing on the "Heart of France" would be a better way to go, like the Village Italy tour, no "big" cities.

Overall, the tour was wonderful. Enjoyed Paris and all the sites visited in France. There is so much history, architecture, art, gardens and more to see. All the people on our tour were very nice. Only downside we experienced was that several people on the tour got sick, and some had Covid from the first day. Very frustrating for all, especially my husband who got very sick from Covid. When you come healthy and vaccinated and then get really sick and miss what you wanted to see most, not good.

"I really enjoyed everything I saw. My favorite was Normandy. I learned so much from Stuart, our tour guide. Standing on the beaches, witnessing holes left by bombs, seeing the cemetery, listening to taps played as the flag was lowered, all were so moving. The number of historic structures we were able to see every day was dizzying, whether castles, cathedrals, half-timbered houses, or city walls. I loved walking the streets of Paris, but also seeing the magnificent Loire valley and other areas spanning hundreds of years of history. I now understand the importance of baguettes and Camembert in French cuisine. Linda was an absolute delight as our guide. She was always happy to tell us more about her beloved homeland. I hated that it had to end.

His poignant story of two American medics trying to save the lives of American and German soldiers bought to a village church to have their wounds taken care of was one of the most touching stories I have ever heard!"

We have always planned our own trips to Europe using the Rick Steves guide books. They are as complete and informative as anything that can be found on the market. But this time we decided to sign up for a full tour to France. Our guide, Rebecca, is probably the best guide we have ever had. She made this trip outstanding for us. I can't express our opinion about Rebecca with any other word other than "EXCELLENT"

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We had been to France several times and yet Rebecca and Rick Steves was able to provide several "wow" moments. Of course Normandy was a huge highlight and our tour guide, Stuart Thompson, was fantastic. Another "wow" moment was the tapestry in Bayeaux. Also the wine tasting let by Nikoli at the Chateau Sellessur Cher was great. I also thought that Da Vinci's house was a real treat."

Outstanding! From the initial welcome to the last day! I was continually impressed with how every detail...hotels, meals, restaurants, bus/metro transportation, sites visited were researched and planned. Our guide helped us navigate on our own, assisted with language/translation, taught us about each region/town/history visited. She was in an invaluable resource (and fantastic person). I highly recommend Rick Steves Tours and looking forward to the next RS trip! WELL DONE!!

"This is a difficult question to answer as there were so many WOW moments. Mont St. Michel "Laud" service, Amboise, Bourges, Normandy D-Day Beaches, St. Mere Eglise, Guedelon, Leonardo DaVinci house and PARIS!! Of course, the time spent with our guide, Rebecca, and bus driver Jacques was amazing!!"

This was our 2nd Rick Steves tour and it proved to be another winner! Great itinerary starting with exciting and iconic Paris followed by small, quaint, stand-out towns. Charming hotels, helpful local guides and yummy local foods. We had a great tour group and I feel like we met as strangers and left as friends! Rebecca was our tour guide and she was fantastic! Enthusiastic, helpful, knowledgeable and witty! Jacques was our bus driver, who expertly drove us throughout the heart of France. Merci!

Everything starts with the guide and Rebecca was exceptional! Her knowledge, background and especially her enthusiasm were amazing. She was always available, helpful and fun. Despite some weather issues (rain, cold) we had a great time. Paris was enchanting! So much to see and experience! But I believe what really sets Rick Steves' tours apart are the activities/cities you would not see or choose on your own. Specifically, Guedelon and our wine tasting at Chateau de Selles Sur Cher.

Although we have always used Rick Steves travel guide books to help us plan other European vacations, this was our first Rick Steves tour. We were very pleased with our trip. The size of the group, the variety of lodging and activities, the balance of group time and free time made our vacation memorable and enjoyable.

"It’s very hard to pick out one WOW moment because the word was nearly worn out by the end. Even if you travel to Europe on your own, it’s easy to be “wowed” by the big, major sites—the Louvre, the cathedrals, the chateaus, the gardens—but the out of the way towns, the lesser known stories, the wine tasting lesson, the Guedelon castle were unique experiences we would never have found on our own."

This was my fourth Rick Steves' tour, but the first for my wife and stepdaughter. I tried to explain the 'Europe Through the Back Door' way before going, but once they started experiencing it, they were thrilled. Julie was a great guide, and treated us all as friends. She let us in on her experiences as an American in France - the compare and contrast. We watched the French snap election through her lens, and she helped us understand the difference in the July 4th vs. Juillet 14 celebrations

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The whole thing. Loved seeing Guédelon as a precursor to Loire. Especially liked feeling confident to do the extra things Julie pointed us to: Following the blue light walking tour at night in Bourges; seeing the market alive in Montparnasse; going up to the abbey at Mont St. Michel early in the morning to listen to the monks and nuns sing in an ancient private chapel (heavenly!); Watching Bastille eve fireworks in Bayeux and fireworks off the Eiffel Tower on the 14th with young Parisians."

We really enjoyed the way the tour tries to immerse you in the experience. Whether it was handholding us through taking our first Metro trips in Paris, staying at small hotels that represented the neighborhoods and towns we were in, and teaching how to get more out of our experience. I can't say enough about our tour director Arnaud and busdriver Jacque. You could tell there was quite a lot of thought and planning that went into all details of our tour, and it was very much appreciated! Thanks!

This tour was filled with authentic experiences that truly deliver the flavors and personalities of each region. The attention to detail made every day a delight. The Paris and the Heart of France was a great way to experience France for a first timer. It exposes you to Paris and different parts of France on your way to Normandy. It would have been good to have more time in Bourges and Fougeres. This trip was a long time coming. I promised my granddaughter, when she was 7 years old, that if she did well in school I would take her on a trip anywhere she wanted to go. She immediately chose Paris. 10 years later she finished top in her class and it was time to plan a trip! I chose a Rick Steves Tour because I had no idea how to navigate a trip of that magnitude on my own. Also, his philosophy on travel was similar to my own. Terrific! This being my 4th RS tour, I can say that I’ve found the quality of each tour experience consistently high (why I keep coming back!) I appreciate this overall standard of excellence and the carefully planned itineraries that provide rich and meaningful experiences, e.g, even on days with a lengthy bus ride - we’re not merely traveling from point A to point B, but stopping midway for interesting and educational experiences such as Medieval Guedelon.

The tour had a good blend of experiences. There was time spent seeing Paris and its museums as well as time spent seeing the smaller towns and also the chateaus of the Loire valley. This was our third Rick Steves trip that included Paris. We enjoyed arriving a few days early to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower this time. One of our favorite small towns was Amboise. It is on the Loire River and is an enjoyable, walkable town. We also enjoyed seeing Leonardo da Vinci's home and inventions.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment was the Normandy tour. Our local British guide, Stuart Robertson was excellent and was able to describe the D-Day invasion as though we were there. The weather was also a factor. It was cold and rainy and very windy much like the day 80 years ago. Because my wife's father served in the Navy as an electrician on the landing craft during that invasion it was especially meaningful for us to be there. Hearing taps played at the American Cemetery was a special moment too"

This was my first Rick Steves tour and I was very pleased with the organized way the trip was conducted. It was flexible but still structured enough to keep on schedule .

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I can't pick a favorite "wow" moment cause there were so many! The Loire Valley castles were amazing, Paris was great and the quaint little towns were all "wows" for me"

I would expect nothing less than perfection from a Rick Steves Tour. Everything has been meticulously planned to give us the best experience and it shows. My first trip, but many friends have been on his tours and everyone raves. Our guide Rebeca was a delight and so knowledgeable about France. I also appreciated our expert driver Hans.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"All sights chosen were interesting but Chateau de Chenonceau took my breath away. So beautiful with exquisite fresh flowers in every room. "

We were immersed in so many different parts of France: Paris, small villages, wine tasting, history and the strong bond with our partners in WW11, connecting with the French in a way that many miss when traveling there.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our guide, Rebecca, made our trip fabulous. Help with the language, French customs and just plain fun was her gift to us. D-Day sites and our exceptional guide was our cherished moment of the tour. So proud of our history there."

The trip was amazing. The group size was not too big, the leader was amazing, and the locations visited did a great job of covering a variety of France and gave us a real feel for the country

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The empty streets on Mont Saint-Michel in the evening after all the crowds have left! "

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Mont Saint-Michel. The tour, the church service at the Abbey, the views, the story! Amazing! And I really appreciated that we got there as crowds were leaving and we left as crowds were coming - well timed!!!!"

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to take a Paris & the Heart of France tour. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your online customer account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your customer account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Paris' Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY) airports.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves France guidebook.
