Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to the Netherlands
We'll start in quintessentially Dutch Haarlem, a quick train, bus, or taxi ride from the Amsterdam airport. We'll meet at our hotel at 3 p.m. for an orientation and chance to get acquainted, followed by a walking tour of this charming town and a traditional rijsttafel dinner together. We'll toast the start of our adventure together with a tasting of the typical spirit of the Netherlands, Jenever. Prost!
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Haarlem.
Day 2: Progressive, Artistic Amsterdam
This morning we'll hop aboard the train into Amsterdam and hit the ground walking with an informative tour of Amsterdam's historic streets, gaining an insider's perspective to this progressive and artistic city. Then we'll enjoy a relaxing boat ride on the centuries-old canals, lined with teetering, gable-topped houses. After a break for lunch, we'll take a guided tour of the remarkable Rijksmuseum, featuring masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer. Afterward, you'll have free time to visit the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House (reserve online, well in advance!), or whatever strikes your fancy. Your evening is free for more adventures in Amsterdam or back in Haarlem. Dinner is on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Train: 1 hour. Boat: 1 hour. No bus. Sleep in Haarlem.
Day 3: Dutch Treats and Rhine Views
We'll travel to Arnhem's open-air museum this morning to see what life was like in this corner of Europe centuries ago. We'll wander among the quaint houses, village storefronts, and working windmills, and round off our Dutch experiences with a traditional pancake lunch together. Then we'll work our way down to Germany's castle-studded Rhineland, enjoying dinner together at our half-timbered hotel nestled in the medieval village of Bacharach on the Rhine.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Bacharach.
Day 4: Rhine Castles and a River Cruise
This morning, we'll take a walking tour of Bacharach with an entertaining local guide. Afterward, at nearby St. Goar, we'll hike up the hill to tour the mighty medieval Rheinfels Castle and enjoy its commanding view of the Rhine Valley. We'll then board a boat for a relaxing Rhine River cruise, passing picturesque villages and feudal castles, followed by free time for dinner on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Boat: 1 hour. Bus: ½ hour. Sleep in Bacharach.
Day 5: Medieval Rothenburg
We'll get an early start today, arriving in Rothenburg, Germany's best-preserved medieval town, just before lunchtime. After a helpful orientation tour, the afternoon is yours to see the best woodcarving in Germany (Riemenschneider's altarpiece), walk the medieval wall, tour the Crime and Punishment Museum, or hunt down the best apple strudel in town. This evening we'll tag along on the Night Watchman's tour.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Rothenburg.
Day 6: Dachau and Salzburg
Today we'll make a 21st-century pilgrimage to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial near Munich, where we'll learn powerful lessons about the Holocaust and World War II. Then we'll continue our drive across the Bavarian countryside into Austria and our home base for the next two nights, scenic Salzburg. After an orientation walk through town, you'll be free to join new friends for dinner in a traditional café or outdoor beer garden.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Salzburg.
Day 7: Salzburg and Strudel
This morning we'll join a local guide and trace Mozart's steps on a walking tour through charming Salzburg, a city of splendid gardens, beautiful Baroque architecture, and picturesque medieval lanes. We'll enjoy lunch together and finish with a cooking lesson, where we'll learn to make one of Austria's famous pastries — Apfelstrudel. The rest of the day is free for hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, tagging along on a Sound of Music tour, or strolling around the charmingly preserved old town. This evening is perfect for enjoying a classical music performance.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Salzburg.
Day 8: Italy's Incomparable Venice
We'll take a scenic, all-day drive to Venice today, stopping en route for lunch together in a characteristic Italian-Tirolean village. In Venice, we'll park our bus and board a vaporetto boat for a Grand Canal ride to our hotel in the historic heart of this seductive city. Tonight we'll take an alleys-and-canals orientation stroll to our first Italian dinner together. Afterward your guide will organize an optional gondola ride for a uniquely Venetian experience. If the moon is out, it will hit your eye like a big pizza pie.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 7 hours. Sleep in Venice.
Day 9: The Art of Wandering in Venice
This morning our local guide will take us on a winding walking tour through Venice, blending historic and modern-day stories of this one-of-a-kind treasure and giving us a local's perspective on Venice's fascinating past…and its uncertain future. We'll finish our morning walk in St. Mark's Square. The rest of your day is free to visit the mosaic- and marble-filled St. Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, or the Titian- and Tintoretto-packed Accademia art gallery. Better yet, get lost (remember, it's an island) exploring the alleys, cruising the canals, and "crawling" the pubs.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus (too much water). Sleep in Venice.
Day 10: Florence and Michelangelo's David
An early morning vaporetto ride will reunite us with our bus and driver. We'll drive straight to Florence and hop on board a tram to our hotel in the city's historic center. We'll meet our local guide for a Renaissance tour and learn about Brunelleschi's magnificent cathedral dome, Ghiberti's Baptistery doors, and other creations that helped define this world-changing era. We'll end our walk at the Accademia Gallery to marvel at works of sculptural genius: Michelangelo's rough-hewn Prisoners and his greatest masterpiece, David. Afterward, we'll have dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Florence.
Day 11: Wonders of Renaissance Florence
This morning is on your own. You can sleep in, get an early start and scramble to the top of Brunelleschi's dome, or browse through Florence's colorful food and craft markets. After lunch, we'll tour the wealth of Botticellis, Leonardos, and Raphaels in the greatest collection of Italian paintings anywhere — the Uffizi Gallery. This evening is free to make your own discoveries.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Florence.
Day 12: All Roads Lead to Rome
This morning we'll make our way to Rome, stopping at an enchanting hill town for lunch and time to explore before continuing our drive into the heart of the Eternal City. After getting oriented to our neighborhood, we'll be introduced to Rome's metro system and savor the flavors of Italy at dinner together. We'll end our day celebrating la dolce vita Roman-style, with an evening stroll through the floodlit heart of the city, lacing together lively campos, classy piazzas, and the splashy Trevi Fountain.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Rome.
Day 13: A Walk Through Caesar's Rome
This morning we'll travel back in time, as a local guide takes us on a walking tour through the ancient heart of Rome, telling us vivid tales on a stroll around the outside of the monumental Colosseum and into the history-drenched Roman Forum, and ending with the spectacular Pantheon. We'll set you free for the rest of the day to enjoy lunch and explore more of the Eternal City on your own. Consider joining the Jubilee Year crowds for a modern-day pilgrimage to St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel (reserve in advance) or simply soak up more of Rome's artistic, historic, and cultural heritage (don't forget to taste some refreshing gelato along the way).
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.
Day 14: To Italy's Cinque Terre
Today we'll drive to the Italian Riviera and the sun-drenched beaches of the dramatic Cinque Terre: five perfectly preserved fishing villages, laced together with hiking paths that meander between vineyards and the deep blue sea. As we approach the Cinque Terre, we'll park our bus and take a short train ride into seaside Monterosso al Mare. Tonight we'll gather together for a feast of local specialties, from homemade pesto to the fresh catch of the day.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: ¼ hour. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in or near Monterosso al Mare.
Day 15: Free Day in the Cinque Terre
Ahh, it's time to take a "vacation from your vacation" today in our Mediterranean getaway. Pick a Cinque Terre village and spend your day exploring the stairways and alleyways, sunning yourself on the rocks, or sipping a cappuccino and catching up on your journal at an outdoor café. Or, if you're looking for lots of exercise, fresh air, and panoramic views, start your day early and hike the cliffside paths that connect the towns.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in or near Monterosso al Mare.
Day 16: To the Heart of the Swiss Alps
Today we'll catch an early train back to our bus and head over the hills, past the farms and pristine lakes of northern Italy, and into the alpine wonderland of Switzerland. After a breathtaking drive into the very heart of the Swiss Alps, we'll arrive at our creaky chalet in the magnificent Lauterbrunnen Valley, where we'll have dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Train: ¼ hour. Bus: 7 hours. Sleep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
Day 17: Free Day in the Alps
The day is all yours to enjoy some of Europe's most dramatic scenery. You may consider a mountain excursion that combines a narrow-gauge railway, a gondola lift, and a spectacular alpine walk above the tree line, surrounded by a panorama of cut-glass peaks…or ride a gondola lift up to the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet, loiter in the thin air, and hike down…or wander through the valley and walk to the thundering Trümmelbach Falls, a unique set of waterfalls encased behind the valley walls.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
Day 18: A Hearty Taste of Burgundy
Today we'll say auf Wiedersehen to the Alps and bonjour to la belle France. We'll drive into profoundly French Burgundy for a look at small-town France. We'll have an orientation walk through the heart of Burgundy's inviting wine capital, Beaune, visit the famous Hôtel Dieu medieval hospital, and enjoy a wine tasting together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Beaune.
Day 19: Historic and Neighborhood Paris
This morning we'll drive straight to Paris, where you'll have an orientation to the neighborhood markets and cafés to find lunch on your own. After checking into our nearby hotel, we'll have a transportation lesson and Métro ride to the historic heart of Paris: the Ile de la Cité, where we'll meet our local guide and take a stroll through the city's early history. We'll learn about two of the world's most important Gothic churches: the resilient and legendary Notre-Dame and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle, before continuing on the lively, bohemian Latin Quarter. Your evening is free for dinner and more discoveries.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Paris.
Day 20: Parisian Cityscapes and Masterpieces
This day provides a busy, star-studded finale for our tour. We'll start with a visit to the magnificent Louvre Museum. With the Rick Steves Audio Europe™ app in hand, Rick's voice will guide you through the Louvre's timeless treasures, including Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more. The rest of the day is yours to round out your Paris sightseeing with a visit to museums like the Orsay and Rodin, or perhaps a walk down the Champs-Elysées — the choices are endless. This evening we'll have our final dinner together, sharing memories and toasting our newly made friends. Salut!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.
Day 21: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. If you're staying on in Paris, today would be a great day to hop on the train and tackle the sprawling palace and grounds at Versailles. If you're headed home, it's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Au revoir!
(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

A fantastic introduction to multiple European countries and cultures. Though 21 days, it is rapid-paced with many hotel changes and strenuous walking. This "sampler platter" of tours will not allow you to go deep in any one location, but gives you a great idea of where you'd like to return in the future. The hotels were very good and in great locations. The meals were full of variety and of good quality. Our guides (we had 2) were well-informed and energetic. The bus comfortable, well-driven.

The number of sights we packed in this trip were amazing! There was also a good group and alone time ratio. Guides and driver was very good. It was truly a bucket list trip. If I had to add a not so great, it would probably be some of the hotels. While most were nice, a few had issues like mold, broken showers and were not fully clean.

Was a great tour for bonding with other tour mates and expectations were met by tour guide. Was very active but we knew that going in, made sure that we were in decent shape and had only carry ons which worked out great for this trip. Would definitely recommend this trip. For the 3 weeks we were a Rick Steves family and looking out for each other,

This was our 6th Rick Steves tour and we really lucked out. Jody our tour guide was fantastic, Gregoire our tour guide in training was great and Richard our bus driver was the cherry on top. Tour mates were courteous, kind and most had a good sense of humor which is needed when spending 3 weeks with people you never met before. We had been to some of the cities on previous tours and looked forward to seeing them again and learning more. It is a very fast paced tour.

"We saw and listened to so much it was overwhelming at times. What was favorite “wow” moment? Maybe the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle, views of the Swiss Alps, Michelangelo’s David in the Uffizi Gallery, tour of the mighty medieval Rheinfels Castle or seeing Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa in the Louvre Museum. How would one pick a “wow” moment after experiencing so much."

Jody’s enthusiasm for the art, the message and the antiquity of this church was contagious. I won’t forget the laser-like Star Wars depiction of the anti-Christ angels zapping the sinners below! I must also mention our spectacular Alps view from our room of windows in Murren, Switzerland! Breathtakingly beautiful morning, noon and night!"

The description of this tour as written on the website set accurate expectations for the tour. The areas we visited gave us a good flavor for the culture of each country. Our hotels were located right in the heart of restaurants, pubs, and numerous attractions. We were able to walk to most. Our guide was professional, caring, and knowledgeable of each area we visited. Even our bus driver was fun, entertaining, and knowledgeable. It was a trip of a lifetime.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"I had a “wow” moment almost every day. Vatican City and Roman Forum-WOW! When we arrived in Switzerland it was late, chilly, and raining hard. We made our trek from the bus to two gondolas, and then walked 10 min to the hotel. Tired and cold when we went to bed. However, when morning came we opened the curtains to our room and BAM there were the Swiss Alps close enough to almost touch them! WOW!! And in Paris we were able to lay in bed with a view of the twinkling Eiffel Tower at night-WOW!!"

We watched numerous videos, reviewed books and online comments about Rick Steves Tours in General, this 21 day tour in particular to make our decision to treat ourselves to this experience. As advertised it was the most intense 21 days I have ever spent. Well planned and organized with something new and exciting to look forward to everyday. Guides were generally good and informative while some were outstanding. Andy our main guide was exceptional and took great care of us when we were sick. We didn't realize September was the busiest tourist season and felt it impacted our enjoyment of Venice, Florence and Rome. There was a couple of outstanding meals, but food was mediocre.

We had heard about Rick Steves' tours, books, TV shows for years & knew that his tours were the way to go. Even tho' (perhaps because) we are in our 70's, we wanted to have as full and varied (and safe) a tour of Europe as possible by joining Rick's Europe in 21 days. It was fabulous from beginning to end.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"There were so many "wow" moments -- the walled cities of Bacharach and Rothenberg, the narrow streets and bridges of Venice and Florence, the amazing ruins of the Coliseum and Forum, the fairy-tale-come-true aspect of Neuschwanstein Castle, the quiet beauty of Monterosso's seascape and hills..... For scenery, though, nothing beat the drive to Lauterbrunnen Valley. I must have said "wow" around every bend and switchback. The Alps were truly breathtaking. "

The entire tour was outstanding! The itinerary was well thought out and the hotels/dinner experiences were much better than I expected. Our tour guide, Andy, was fantastic and “locked in” the entire 3 weeks. With all the uncontrollable variables and personalities, Andy managed the tour expertly. The tour gave us all a good feel for the differences and similarities seen throughout Europe and think it narrowed many participants focus as to where they would like to tour next. Great time

The planning and execution were flawless. There were remarkably few times when we had to adjust on the fly. The mix of activities was excellent and it was a great introduction to travel in Europe. This experience combined with Switzerland's overall natural beauty made it a cherished memory of our European tour."

He made the tour a once in a life time experience. Thank you for the memories!

Our first ‘Rick Steve’s’ trip was spectacular. A snapshot of many places in Europe that allowed a taste of culture and highlights at each location. Tim Tendick was outstanding, his knowledge (historical, political, cultural), communication, group and people skills, etc, all fed an incredible experience. Local guides were fantastic. Hotels were lovely and very ‘European’. Busses were comfortable with good visibility during travel. We appreciated the prep materials provided to manage planning.

Where to begin? Having watched a number of TV episodes on PBS, I was excited to see places I had seen Rick visit and the tour did not disappoint... six countries, 10 major cities, culture, history, art/architecture, new friends... we saw it all and more and it was wonderful the entire time. I was a little physically unprepared for the demands of the tour and struggled a bit, but I would not quit nor trade the experience for anything. Thank you for making dreams come true! It was magnificent!

"A first view of the Alps and the Eiffel Tower, a clifftop view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley with the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau in front of me, to see the Adriatic and Mediterranean, and eating delicious escargot in France... but the most memorable moment was the seafood feast in Monterosso - pesto pasta and then deliciousness poured from an earthen pot, steaming in front of me... I can still smell and taste the lobster, prawns, mussels, octopus, and cuttlefish! I will never forget it!!"

It was very fast paced and busy from the start, anyone considering this trip should heed the warning of long walks and strenuous physical activity. Aside from that, the tour was fantastic, providing many museum, church, castle and history of the times. The reason for a very good instead of outstanding is because of the Covid 19 Policy. 6 of our 26 tour members left the tour early for testing positive. Colds or flu are ok but not Covid. To much cost to risk having to leave the tour.

I found the tour showed us local customs and cuisine. It was well designed and executed. The guide was able to fit a lot into a day while staying in schedule. A good balance of local life and history. The bus was clean and comfortable. John the driver was excellent. He knew the roads very well and got the bus through some tight spots. The biggest relief on the tourwas knowing there was a toilet on the bus. Others echoed that sentiment.

The tour was a good blend of comfort and adventure. It wasn’t so adventurous that I felt frightened or endangered but I did do a lot more things and explore far more than I would at home or travelling on my own. After the pandemic lockdown, I was quite uncomfortable around people. The tour forced me out of my shell and made interaction with people easier. I also made connections between locations and history that I really hadn’t considered before. I am glad I took the trip.

It was a different kind of experience than our European travels on our own, but it was wonderous in its own way—everything travel should be! Countless moments of delight, discovery, and enchantment alternated with thought-provoking interludes and some sobering realities. I was entertained, educated, and inspired creatively. The art and history of humanity awed me while the modern crowds challenged me. It was a feast for the senses, the intellect, the body, and the spirit! And it was convivial!

"If I must pick one, it would be the hike with Andy from Austria into Germany to Neuschwanstein. I felt like I was in The Lord of the Rings, journeying with Aragorn and a merry band through the enchanted forest. The views were spectacular, and we had the trail all to ourselves. When we reached the lake below the castle, we even took a dip, like water nymphs! Soon the castle loomed above us, its gleaming walls shining through the morning mist. We had arrived in the land of the elves! "

Andy was outstanding. He had a complete knowledge of the areas we visited. We really didn't need to have the local guide. I saw many interesting things, and learned lessons about traveling. Next time if I travel in summer, I’ll only stay at hotels that have air-conditioning. Best of Europe is a great sampler, but when I go back, I’d spend at least 3 nights in each place (as I did in my 2 previous trips to Europe). I woun’t employ tour guides inside museums; they repeated much of what I already knew from Rick Steves’ books & videos; large groups around paintings make it harder for other people to see the art.

"Wow moments: walking into the Pantheon and seeing the oculus; seeing the French Impressionist paintings in the Orsay, my hotel room window view in the Swiss Alps. My favorite: meeting Australian emergency room nurse Renee and hiking with her 5 miles in the Cinque Terre. The organisation of the tour and professionalism of all invoved could not be bettered. The tour leaders and the local guides were really good and of a particularly high standard everywhere. We were very lucky to have Andy Steves as tour leader. His knowldege and his demeanour under pressure was exceptional. The stopovers were often in small interesting places that we most likely would have passed by if doing this tour self organised.

"There were lots of wow moments ... in particular the Swiss Alps were amazing. The gondolas in venice with the musicians onboard one of our gondolas were very special. The attitudes encouraged and fostered by the tour leaders meant everybody got along very well. There was nobody in our group that we wouldn't like to spend more time with."

We had a lot of ground to cover so it was fast paced, but I did not feel rushed. We had a group of 29 people and we ALL became fast friends. Our tour guide Tim was fantastic; very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Our bus driver Math was super as well. Except for one hotel where we had very little hot water and another where I had a pretty substantial leak of water in my ceiling, all others were good. The reason I did not give Outstanding was because I felt the tour in Paris was weak.

"I had two "wow" moments. The first was the gondola ride in Venice and the second was walking into my top- floor hotel room in Murren and looking directly onto the Alps. "

We really enjoy Rick Steves tours. This was my 2nd / my wife's 3rd. The tour did a great job at lodging us at the heart of the towns / cities along the way. Using privately / family owned made for a nice local experience of the area. It has a nice balance between group activities and free time. The bus was comfortable, and it felt like a home away from home. Tim Tendick was an amazing guide and did an outstanding job. Finally, getting to know the other people travelling was just so much fun

It was a remarkable tour, with a great tour leader, Tim Tendick, a great driver, Matt, great guides, and 29 great fellow travelers. It is an intense tour, with a lot to see and do every day, but with enough free time to take it easy for awhile or see something we found of interest. Some of the meals were memorable for the great food, and for the great camaraderie at the table. By the time we hit Paris we really understood what it is to relax and enjoy meals with friends.

"I am going to hedge on picking one "wow" moment. It would be easy to pick the Alps, the hike at Cinque Terre, or Michelangelo's David, but there were so many other "wow" moments. Every place had something original to enjoy, and the tour guides helped a lot. Without them it would be difficult to appreciate so the art."

The tour was FABULOUS and very well-organized by the Rick Steves company! Our guide Tim Tendick was extremely knowledgeable about each area we visited, including historical context of each location, and about logistical details that enabled our group to navigate transportation systems seamlessly, including trains, subways, buses, and water taxis. He enthusiastically introduced us to local customs and foods. In Rome, Tim called out a pickpocket who was trying to steal my husband's wallet!

"There were too many "wow" moments to single out just one: the bikes and canals of Amsterdam; the pancake house at the lovely Arnhem Open-air Museum; beautiful, peaceful Bacharach; Rheinfels Castle; sobering Dachau Memorial; Neuschwanstein Castle; beautiful Austrian Alps; "David" at Florence's Accademia; exquisite St. Peter's Basilica, with Michelangelo's Pieta; the Colosseum; picturesque Cinque Terre; breathtaking Swiss Alps; Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo at the Louvre; Eiffel Tower at night!"

Our tour guide Tim made the trip smooth and his calm demeanor helped especially when being in each new country. Our group of tour mates were all wonderful people which made everything even more enjoyable. The rest stops were well placed as well.

"Most definitely my wow moment was see the Alps in Switzerland and getting to stay in Murren which is 2 gondola rides up! Then going to the top of the Schilthorn the clouds parted and the sun was out so the view was magnificent. My other wow moment was getting to see and stay in Cinque Terre Monterosso for a much needed beach day!"

Having previously taken the Heart of France tour--and having loved it--my wife and I had high expectations of the Best of Europe 21 day tour. We were not disappointed, as the tour exceeded our highest hopes and demands in every way. From the transportation, hotels, museums, and meals, everything was so carefully crafted and organized so as to allow us to simply be in the moment and enjoy our Grand Tour experience. Best of all was our tour guide, Tim, who was truly remarkable. A real gem!

We were a little hesitant about doing a 'tour' to see Europe, but after 21 days and lifelong memories, we are glad that we decided to do Rick Steve's Tour. Everything was carefully planned, which removed a lot of the stress from our family and allowed us to take it all in. Our guide, Tim, was great and he provided a lot of history and facts, which complimented the various stops. Our tour had the perfect blend of people which really added to the experience.

It was a wonderful introduction to Europe and we are already looking at other Rick Steve options for future travel. Really enjoyed everyone in our group and our guide, Tim, was informative, skilled at managing the logistics, and always encouraging and upbeat. I'm in my upper sixties and walk every day at home. We were able to keep up the active pace without any problem. So glad we kept to the recommended carry-on & backpack to haul over cobblestones and up multiple flights of stairs.

I had very high expectations for our tour. The experience met or exceeded all of my hopes for a truly remarkable travel experience. The variety of attractions kept the trip stimulating. The pace of activity was demanding but it ensured we would have the maximum experience in our limited time. Our tour guide had a wealth of background and experience. Dimitri made things flow smoothly and shared an amazing amount of information. Our bus and it's driver, Richard, were fantastic.

"Despite unusually wet weather in the early parts of the trip, we lucked out with clear skies when it really mattered. I find it difficult to pick a favorite moment. There were too many wow moments that peaked very different interests, making this question hard to answer. If I am forced to pick one highlight, ascending the Alps to the peak at Schilthorn was probably my singular favorite wow moment. We lucked out with an awe inspiring clear morning to immerse ourselves in the mountains."

Dimitri was an excellent guide, and did a remarkable job coordinating the tour activities. Richard (bus driver) also was a group favorite and I could not be happier with the job he did. The only negative I could state would be the threat of kicking tour members from the tour if they contract covid, which lingered in my mind the whole trip. No one in Europe wears masks or seems to be concerned about it. Covid has become nothing more than a cold, and should be treated as such.

Long time Rick Steves fan, first time actually taking a tour. Rick’s got this thing locked in, everything was exactly as advertised. The website says this is a “strenuous” tour, I say that’s putting it lightly, grueling would be a better word but you end up at the most amazing places - 100% worth it. Both our tour manager & bus driver are some of the most impressive people I’ve ever met. A lot of what we did on this tour will be forgotten, I will remember those 2 forever.

"The view from our hotel room in Murren. Our bus drivers meticulously maintained bus & fabulous shoe collection. Richard’s pride in his work was on full display everywhere. Never expected the bus driver to be my “wow” moment, but here I am. Very impressed by him, he greeted everyone individually, everyday. I cried (and I wasn’t the only one), when he dropped us off in Paris, it was like losing a family member. Richard knows how to win friends & influence people, he’s a keeper!"

As our guide Matthias said, every day on this tour was a new adventure, and we loved every minute! We enjoyed the scheduled group activities, esp the guided tours. This was my first Rick Steves' Tour and I didn't really know what to expect. The tour exceeded my expectations in terms of great organization by our guide and useful information in each city/town we visited. I was a little worried about a group of 29 people being able to stay organized and be on time but it wasn't an issue. While we were very busy doing things it was also relaxing not to be in charge of our days. I enjoyed turning most of that over to our great guide Matthias.

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Amsterdam (AMS) and out of Paris (CDG or ORY) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. The Amsterdam airport is about a 40-minute train, bus, or taxi ride from Haarlem, where the tour begins. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Best of Europe guidebook.
