Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to England
The beautiful Georgian city of Bath is a 90-minute train ride from central London. We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel for a "Welcome to England" get-together. Then we'll take a short neighborhood orientation walk and get acquainted over a traditional roast dinner.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Bath.
Day 2: Roman and Georgian Bath
Our day begins with a walking tour of Bath's charming streets, including its medieval abbey square and the imposing sweep of its Royal Crescent. Next we're off to tour the town's remarkably preserved, 2,000-year-old Roman Baths, where you'll have a chance to drink from these natural mineral springs in the Pump Room. The rest of the day is free to make your own discoveries in this historic town. You might visit the colorful Fashion Museum or — as Roman travelers did — bathe in a mineral spa.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Bath.
Day 3: Glastonbury and Wells
Today we'll explore and learn about mystical Glastonbury, the legendary resting place of King Arthur, where we'll also enjoy a picnic in the shadow of the abbey ruins. Later we'll tour England's oldest completely Gothic structure — the graceful Wells Cathedral — before returning to Bath in the late afternoon.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Bath.
Day 4: Stone Circles and Scholarly Oxford
This morning we'll take a stroll through Avebury's mysterious prehistoric stone circles. Then we'll drive north to the college town of Oxford, home of the oldest university in the English-speaking world. We'll join a local guide for a walking tour of the historic center and learn how the town has been shaped through the centuries by its university and rivers. We'll end our day in the charming Cotswolds market town of Stow-on-the-Wold.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Stow-on-the-Wold.
Day 5: Cotswold Villages
Today we'll take a scenic Cotswolds drive, stopping to explore an ever-so-English village and to tour Stanway House, home to the local aristocracy. This afternoon you'll have free time to explore more picturesque market villages on your own — or join your guide for a leisurely country walk past cottages and sheep, through fields and kissing gates. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together at a country pub with the sounds of local folk musicians, where you can try a sip of the local farmhouse "hard cider."
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Stow-on-the-Wold.
Day 6: Wonderful Wales
We'll begin our day visiting Stokesay Castle, a fortified manor house, where we'll learn about the feudal system and the perks of the well-born. After a lovely cream tea we'll bid cheerio to England and drive into wonderful neighboring North Wales toward the castle-topped harbor town of Conwy. You'll have time to wander through town and walk the city walls overlooking the Irish Sea before our dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Conwy.
Day 7: Sheepdogs, Castles, and Highlands
This morning we'll head to the Carneddau Mountains, where we'll visit a working farm and get to know their talented sheepdogs. Then we're off to Caernarfon to tour the impressive Caernarfon Castle, part of the system of English garrison castles that Edward I built to enforce English rule over North Wales 700 years ago. After lunch, we'll head up into majestic Snowdonia National Park for a drive through some of the most gorgeous scenery North Wales has to offer. The rest of your day is free to roam along Conwy's multi-towered city wall, historic houses, and laid-back harbor.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Conwy.
Day 8: Gardens and Lakes
We'll begin our day by exploring the manicured lawns, terraced beds, and extensive botanical collection of Bodnant Garden. Then we'll cross back into England and wend our way through the spectacular peaks and valleys of the Lake District, a favorite haunt of poets and painters. After an orientation to the town of Keswick, the evening is yours to find dinner in a local pub or traditional English chippy.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Keswick.
Day 9: The Lake District
Today we'll explore the natural beauty of the Lake District. You can join your guide for a leisurely boat cruise on the island-studded Derwentwater — or strike out on a little expedition of your own 'twixt lakes and mountains, thanks to a wealth of hiking opportunities along well-marked trails. This afternoon, you'll have the chance to join your guide for a walk up to Castlerigg Stone Circle for sweeping views of the valley.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: ½ hour. No bus. Sleep in Keswick.
Day 10: Hadrian's Wall
We'll travel back in time today with a walk along Hadrian's ancient Roman wall, once considered the boundary dividing civilization and barbarity (though the Scots might disagree), followed by a tour of the Roman auxiliary fort, Vindolanda. We'll have lunch before heading to the bustling cathedral city of York. Upon arrival, we'll take a walking tour beneath the leaning, half-timbered houses of The Shambles in the city's marvelous medieval center. Tonight we'll indulge in England's favorite ethnic food with a tasty Indian dinner together.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in York.
Day 11: York Minster and the Medieval City
We'll begin our day marveling at York Minster's stained glass windows on our tour of the largest Gothic church north of the Alps. You'll have the rest of the day free to explore more of this enchanting city. It's a great night to enjoy an ethereal evensong choir performance in the Minster.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in York.
Day 12: Regal London
Today we'll board a train and make a beeline past the Midlands for London. Upon arrival, we'll enjoy an entertaining guided bus tour, hearing tales about Big Ben, the river Thames, and more. Then, led by a local guide, we'll visit one of London's big, famous churches: Westminster Abbey, where England's kings and queens have been crowned and buried since 1066 or St. Paul's Cathedral, the masterpiece of Sir Christopher Wren and the site of Royal weddings and state funerals. Later this afternoon, we'll check into our hotel and get oriented to our neighborhood and London's Tube. Tonight is a perfect evening for the theater (book something in advance from the Colonies or pick up a ticket in London).
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 2 hrs. Bus: 2 hrs. Sleep in London.
Day 13: Tower of London and the River Thames
This morning we'll begin our day of sightseeing with the medieval Tower of London (the first "skyscraper" of its time), where you can join a tour with a witty Beefeater and get a close-up look at the UK's majestic collection of crown jewels. Then we'll take a panoramic cruise on the river Thames. We'll disembark at Westminster, where you'll be free to explore the Churchill War Rooms, tour the British Museum, or take a walk through one of the city's wonderful parks. Tonight we'll meet for a final group dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Cheers!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: ½ hr. No bus. Sleep in London.
Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be easily reached by Tube, train, or taxi from our London neighborhood. For those not ready to return home yet, London is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

Even though the weather was a bit chilly and we had rain for a bit of the tour, we had a wonderful experience with Bill as our tour guide. Our fellow travelers were great and we connected with several others to enhance our experience. Bill is a great guide with lots of information and so calm, even in the face of something unexpected happening. He made the trip the best.

I loved everything we did and everywhere we went. I enjoyed the castles, mansions, gardens and historical sites. The food was delicious at all the restaurants . I would say that there was not enough time at each place but it was a good overview of the highlights of the country and all the more reason to return. Bill Higgs was helpful, attentive and friendly guide. Craig was an excellent driver.

This tour took us to places we might not have experienced on our own. For example, our visit with Welsh hill farmer, Gareth Wyn Jones, was very special and opened our eyes to consider carefully the sources of our food supply and the effects our choices have on the environment. We loved the tips our tour guide, Paul Guest, gave us in each city and town we visited. It was also good that we had enough time to explore on our own. He threw in some extra stops like the cemetery Churchill

I wondered whether a tour of England would live up to the experiences I had on other Rick Steves tours, my main concern being whether England, as a more familiar culture than, say, France or Italy would be as interesting. I'm happy to report it ranked right up there with those other great experiences. There were so many fascinating and beautiful places and people. Tour guide Liz and driver David were both professional and full of fun. Food options were great.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"The beauty, charm, history, variety, and intimacy of the Cotswold villages and the nearby ancient mysteries. This was pure magic for me. This was our 4th Rick Steves tour but not our favorite. This is not the fault of anyone in particular. Our guide Liz and our driver David were both excellent. Liz in particular had to deal with several challenging situations and came through like the pro she is. Challenges: Virus (not Covid) spread through group, weather was colder/rainier than forecast, breakfasts were redundant and for us, there were way too many castles, cathedrals, and abbeys- more variety would have been good
Favorite "WOW" moment

The tour is a great introduction to England and Wales, the people, foods, history, culture and beauty. We found the tour to be educational, fun, and appropriately paced. We have independently traveled all over Europe, but this was our first organized tour. Our guide Jeanie shared so much history, appropriate cheekiness, and great organizational skills. The local guides were also excellent. He did so in a way that was fun, funny, and quite educational. The places we visited were outstanding. The people we met along the way were outstanding. The agenda had the perfect mix of organized activities and free time for exploration.

"Gosh. There were so many. Each city we visited and stayed in had its own particular wow moment. Honestly, as a seasoned traveler, Ive come to expect (enthusiastically) each wow moment, and I can find them each day. However, what really wowed me this year was the camaraderie of the group, which was the best I’ve ever experienced, and the leadership of Paul our exceptional guide. I’ll hold these people close for a lifetime. I esp loved our walk in stow, sheep herding, & York. Thank you!!! "

"Definitely our experience with the sheep farmer, Gareth. This was not a sheep herding demonstration but about the importance of sustainable farming and how it affects our climate and planet. He is also quite the character and made it so interesting. Using our volunteers, he showed us not just what the dog does but the actions of the humans in herding. I was even able to help hand sheer a sheep! Never would have expected that! I continue to follow Gareth and his sheep farming adventures on FB! "

"We had so many wow moments! So many beautiful Cathedrals, picturesque ruins, quaint little villages, amazing guides. The ah-ha moment of discovering the garden where Beatrice Potter was inspired to write Peter Cottontail. But possibly the one thing that will linger the longest in my heart was the talented sheep dog and the sheep farmer with his sense of humor, overlooking the beauty of the area, along with the plight of all farmers around the world. The historical value of the moment. 💕"

Our tour guide Robert was excellent! I learned so much about each site we visited and I loved the in depth history he provided. "There were many outstanding moments in the tour (Gareth wyn Jones' farm in the hills behind Conwy, Avebury Henge, the flour mill & fountain at Stanway House, England's superb public transport system, etc., but if I hold to Andrew's definition of a 'wow' moment being something exceptional that you didn't expect, I'd have to say the entertainment that followed our group meal at the King's Arms in Stow-on-the-Wold. The was an awesome and pure slice of British pub culture I didn't see coming. "

I loved the Best of England tour. We were fortunate to have good weather, wonderful sights to see, exposure to the country’s long history and seeing some beautiful cathedrals and castles. "So many but one was seeing the giant trees and gardens at Bodnant Gardens, and the beautiful countryside of the Lake District dotted with sheep and stone walls. I also enjoyed visiting an allotment garden in Bath and hearing the enthusiasm the gardeners had for nature and growing their own food and flowers. I found the people in England to be friendly and helpful, especially at the Tube and train stations. "

The cities and towns revisited were all worth it The schedule was busy, our guide did a superb job of being very organized. The food at the group dinners was abundant and very well presented. The choices were all acceptable and very delicious. I liked that dessert was also included. I was disappointed in the hotels. I was disappointed how many had stairs to climb on the outside and inside with no lift. On our tours we had better hotels and most had lifts. Bad mattresses too caused backaches. Why

"I really enjoyed seeing the Cotswold Villages, Hadrian's Wall, Yorkshire area, Kensington Palace. It would be nice to have a option for hauling suitcases up narrow winding steep stairs. "There were many "wow" moments. The visit to the Sheep farm in Whales was outstanding. Gareth and his wife Rhian were very welcoming. It was educational and fun. An important part of travel is gaining an appreciation for other cultures, ways of life, and people. Gareth is passionate about preserving and protecting the future of Hill Farmers. I believe the farm visit is a vital element of the trip and I hope it will always be included in the tour. "

Our Best of England trip was more than I expected. It was an incredible experience. Kudos to RS for putting the 2 week itinerary together, circling England and with a pass through Wales. It turns out that I actually do like history--especially when I learn it from local guides and experts and experiences in the places where it happened. Did and was awed by the giant pencil, a behemoth of graphite and wood Wondered if all the pencils I'd gone through in my life would add up to It. Not your usual museum! Enjoyed learning about something (pencils) that you don't usually think about. Keswick itself was beautiful and enjoyed the boat ride on the lake and walking around the town."

However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summer has its advantages, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).
